From the Year 6 Classroom

Dear Year 6 Families,

And just like that, term one is done and dusted. It’s hard to believe that term one is just about completed. We have had a busy end to the term, with lots happening both in and out of the classroom.

In Reading, we have finished reading the novel ‘A Silver Donkey’. The novel was a thoughtful and emotional story, teaching the students about kindness, how to be courageous, and that we should never lose hope. It tells the story of two sisters (Marcelle and Coco) who discover a blind soldier hiding in the woods and decide to help him return home. The students engaged in thoughtful discussions and responded to the text through written and creative activities.

In Writing, the students have completed their own fable writing, creating a short story with a moral. With the main characters in the fable being animals, the students developed characters, a setting, using a variety of writing techniques.

In Mathematics we have finished our unit on Area. Using the length and width, students calculated the area of rectangles and composite shapes. Regular practice at home (even just 5–10 minutes a day) will make a big difference to their confidence and success in this area.

In Inquiry, students are beginning a new unit, ‘Sudden and Extreme Changes to Earth’s Surface’, where they will investigate major geological and extreme weather-related events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, drought, bushfires, floods and cyclones.

In Religion, we are in the midst of our Lenten unit, where students are learning about the meaning of Lent as a time of reflection, prayer, and preparation for Easter. We have been discussing ways we can show kindness, make positive choices, and think about how our actions affect others. Students are encouraged to consider small sacrifices or acts of service they can offer during this season.

Easter Activity: The Year 6 students enjoyed a fun and engaging afternoon with their Prep buddies, taking part in a range of Easter activities, including decorating Easter biscuits. The Buddy Program continues to be a valuable initiative, supporting our youngest students as they transition into school life and helping them feel safe, welcomed, and connected. It has been wonderful to see the positive relationships forming between the students. The Year 6s should be proud of the way they have conducted themselves, demonstrating kindness, responsibility, and leadership as they supported and guided their buddies throughout the Term.

Reminders

  • A reminder of the importance of wearing correct school uniform each day. It helps promote pride in our school and sets a positive tone for learning. Students are reminded to wear navy shorts and plain white socks, with no markings on either item. Thank you for your support in maintaining our school standards.
  • Reading Diaries: Please ensure diaries are brought in on Friday to have reading signed off. We recommend 4-5 nights of reading for at least 20mins.
  • Monday 20th April – Pupil Free Day

Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support. It is wonderful to see the students continuing to grow in confidence and independence as we move through the term. We wish everyone a very Happy Easter. May you enjoy the special time together as a family over the holidays.
