From the Year 1 Classroom

Hi Grade 1 families!
Hard to believe that this is our last newsletter for Term 1! Thank you for a great first term, we have loved getting to know your child/ren and how they learn.
Readers- there will be no extra take home readers sent home *this week, please enjoy reading picture story books from home or the local library.
Literacy
Our tricky words we have learnt and will continue to learn are: said, are, her, was, very, you, put, have, were, here, what, want, they, where, some, should, would, could, saw, friend, school, your, again, home, who, many, any
⭐ If you are looking for a challenge at home or some extra learning, please practise spelling these tricky words! ⭐
In our Reading lessons over the past fortnight, we have looked at nouns and verbs. We know nouns are people, places and things, and verbs are ‘action words.’ We have also continued to practise: tricky words, our fluency skills and our accuracy skills, daily.
We have learnt about the digraphs /ai/ as in ‘rain’ and /ay/ as in ‘play and /ee/ as in ‘tree’ and /ea/ as in ‘leaf’
Our Writing lessons have focused on using pronouns and proper nouns while writing sentences. We can write a sentence using a proper noun, then we can use a pronoun. Eg. Sam and Anna are sitting on the picnic rug. They are good friends. He is a great drawer.
We have also continued to use our Writing Checklist to create ‘Super Sentences.’ This week, we have explored the format of a simple information report about spiders! We learnt some very interesting facts! Did you know spiders are not insects? They are arachnids!
Maths-
We have continued to explore number bonds and have continued to partition whole numbers into 2 and three parts! This week we will focus on doubles facts and number bonds using tens and ones. Eg I can make 28 using 2 tens and 8 ones. I know the number bond for this number can be shown like this:
⭐ If you are looking for some extra learning ideas over the holidays- you can make 2 and 3 digit numbers and show it as a number bond, draw it (hundreds tens ones) and write it as a number sentence ⭐
Religion – Lent and Easter
We will continue to learn about Lent and Easter as a special time in our church calendar. We have learnt about the special days leading up to Easter and the days after. Last week, we created the Last Supper scene using Playdoh, some of our creations were outstanding!
Inquiry
We all had a ball at Kennedy Park and the lake, using built and natural environments to keep our bodies active! Some of our favourite activities were the monkey bars and playing on the Pirate Park.
