SMR SWIMMING

Congratulations to the McKinnon Swimming team who took out the Kingston Division at Oakleigh Recreation Centre a few weeks ago!

After slugging it out with archrivals Parkdale & now Beaumaris for the entire day, we managed to get the spoils with some brilliant relay performances from the entire team.

We had nine individual event winners, and seven relay teams head off to the SMR Finals. Lily Baldwin (Year 11), Oscar Whitney (Year 12) and Tilde Christup (Year 12) managed to win individual age group champions for their respective year levels.

We then took a team of 24 off to the SMR Swimming Finals at Harold Holt Swimming Pool. The weather was once again not on our side for the day with plenty of drizzle hanging around.

We had some strong results across the day and a few individual winners: Zach Gordon (Year 11) took out the Boys 17 Years 50m Butterfly and Freestyle and Daniel Sidur (Year 10) steamed home late to win the Boys 16 Years 50m Freestyle. There were also two relay teams that won through to the State Finals: Boys 12 - 13 Years 50m Freestyle Relay team and the Girls 14 Years 50m Freestyle Relay team.

Congratulations to all students that participated across the carnivals. We look forward to the State Finals on Friday 28 April.

A special congratulations also goes to Monash House, who won the McKinnon Swimming Sports for 2023!

JUNIOR LAWN BOWLS

On Friday 24 March the McKinnon Lawn Bowls team in the Junior Division played against the Junior Cheltenham Lawn Bowls team. The stakes were high because the winner would progress to the State Champs. It was a very close match. We played 10 ends. We began well by being 8 - 4 up, but with a bit of luck for Cheltenham the score was suddenly 8 - 12 down! In the last end we could only manage 2 shots and we went down 10-12.

Fingers XX as we may be able to get an invitation into the State Finals in May.

SENIOR LAWN BOWLS

Heading down to Hampton Bowls Club on Friday 24 May our team was excited for the challenge ahead. We had to beat Glen Eira over 10 ends. Both teams started strong with consistent rounds from the get-go. We ended up with a tied score going into the last end.

Our lead Josh Haynes kept his best to last and put in his best two bowls of the day and that won it for us. We are thrilled to be heading to the State Champs on Thursday 4 May in Sunbury. May the force be with us!!

Thanks to Mrs Hooper for organizing our training sessions with the clubs and taking us to the venue.

YEAR 10 OUTDOOR EDUCATION SURF CAMP OCEAN GROVE

During the week of Monday 20 - Friday 24 March two groups (3 days each) of just over 50 students attended a Year 10 Outdoor Education Surf Camp at Ocean Grove.

Students completed 3 two-hour Surf Lessons with Go Ride A Wave, 1 lesson each day where they learnt how to surf. Students also completed activities of beach games, river walks and cooking on camp stoves on day 1.

On Day 2 students went to Bells Beach, shopping at Torquay, enjoyed a Pizza Dinner and went to see a movie together at the cinema.

Finally, Day 3 after their surf lesson students packed up and returned back to McKinnon. A fun time had by all. I would like to thank all the students who attended and the staff and former students who supported me in running the camp and supervising the students.

YEAR 8 SOCIAL BASEBALL CLINIC

On Friday 24 February and Friday 3 March, the instructors from DS Sports visited the social baseball team and gave some important lessons about the game. They passionately explained the rules and aided us with throwing and hitting.

In the second session, we played a game of baseball and put our skills into play. The game was very enjoyable and allowed us to play a competitive game of baseball with people of similar skillset. The whole clinic was very educational and interesting, so we would like to thank DS Sports for providing us with such an opportunity to improve our baseball skills.
