2023 VICTORIAN YOUNG LEADERS: GLOBAL YOUTH FORUM

Last week, a group of enthusiastic Year 9 students started a co-curricular learning program funded and supported by the Victorian Department of Education and Training and delivered by Asia Education Foundation, Asialink at the University of Melbourne.

The Victorian Young Leaders: Global Youth Forum is an interactive three-part learning program designed to deepen students’ understanding of what it means to be a global citizen. Students are introduced to guest speakers who bring awareness to the importance of collaboration and are able to interact with peers from across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region exploring different global perspectives. They apply their knowledge and skills to discuss real world issues and build their skills in public speaking.

On Tuesday and Friday last week, students were introduced to the themes of global citizenship, identity, culture and purpose of being an active, informed global citizen via Zoom conferences. They learned about the Sustainable Development Goals and further investigated global and local issues in gender equality (SDG 5), quality education (SDG 4) and reduced inequality (SDG 10). They heard from experts who support education across the Asia-Pacific, critically considered the different situations in other countries and debated with their peers (within Australia but also in India, Indonesia, Japan and China) issues in education and schooling in the current global context.

The goal of this program is to develop a program led by students, with a clear focus on improving education in a local context. The student group has already set a clear goal to improve disadvantaged students’ education and wants to achieve this goal within this year.

I am very much looking forward to seeing their work continue in Term 2.

Students will attend the third day of the program (at Melbourne University) in Semester 2, introducing their program.

Congratulations to all students involved in these forums for their excellent contributions and interest: Abby Butterworth, Maleesha Dharmadasa, Audrey Gelberg, Shaun Kwong, Avani Kulkarni, Sokratis Linardos, Ava Mclaughlin, Frankie Noble, Sofina Pang, Julia Song, Sabrina Vitiello and Sherry Wu.

The individual results were:

  • Alex Do (9G) 5.5 pts (15th overall)
  • Steve Le (11H) 5 pts (30th overall)

  • Jonathan Kui (11H) 4.5 pts (52nd overall)
  • Peter Nguyen (12I) 4 pts (64th overall)
