CAPTAIN'S CORNER

SENIOR CAPTAIN

We’ve officially reached the final week of Term 1, and students are eager to kick-off their well-deserved school holidays. There was much to discuss this past week: Girls House Basketball, Inter School Basketball and Volleyball, and the upcoming Parent Teacher Interviews. However, this week’s Captain’s Corner has a different focus to consider. Following Mr Kan’s previous address, the students at McKinnon Secondary College were given awful news and, especially the Year 12 cohort, have been terribly saddened as they try to comprehend the incomprehensible.

Whether it be students of Year 7 who have just joined us, or senior school students who have been a part of this community for some time, we all know the importance of kindness and love. These attributes are instilled in us from such a young age, their importance highlighted often in our everyday lives. It is times like these that the act of being there for one another and supporting others is at its utmost importance. We are so lucky to exist in such an inclusive and caring community, and I implore each and every person reading this newsletter to set out every day with the intention of making our world a better place through small but significant acts of kindness.

I personally cannot express how grateful I am to be included in the McKinnon family. To know that I have access to so many people and resources to guide me through profoundly difficult times makes me so proud, and I urge each of you to take advantage of these resources that McKinnon offers.

If there is anything to be taken away from this message let it be this: there is nothing more important in this world than utilising our ability to be kind and compassionate and that we must be grateful for every day and never take advantage of what we have.

I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable two weeks off, and I cannot wait to welcome everyone back for a successful and rewarding Term 2.

JUNIOR CAPTAIN

As Term 1 comes to a close, we reflect on the amazing start we have had to the school year. We had many events this term such as Year 7 and Year 12 camp, Year 11 and Year 12 Formal, Swimming Carnival, and everything in between! But one of McKinnon’s biggest events is the House Music Festival.

Earlier this term over 350 students signed up to perform at McKinnon’s House Music Festival, where students display their talents in singing, dancing and instrumental. On Wednesday 22 March, it was lights, camera, action! All performers looked ecstatic and eager to show their family and friends what their rehearsals had been leading up to.

House Music opened with the choral performances, with songs such as ‘River Deep, Mountain High’ and ‘Diamonds’, which included many solo acts. Next was the instrumental performance, where instrumentalists performed well known songs such as ‘The Final Countdown’ and ‘Dancing Queen’, which hyped up the crowd for the dance sector. Finally, students performed a range of different dance styles such as ballet, group dance and even break dancing.

After a difficult decision on Matt Little’s part, he concluded that the winners were …. MONASH!!

I congratulate all singers, dancers and instrumentalists on their sensational performances, as well as Monash on their win.

Thank you to Miss Vrisk, Miss Papworth, all Music teachers, House Captains, our hosts Mr Lynch and Miss Angell and the AV team for all their work on the lighting, audio and filming.

I am honoured to have been selected for Junior School Captain and am thrilled for the year ahead!
