From the Library

Challenge yourself to get reading!

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open, and the John Cain Library is excited to be participating.

The updated PRC online application offers a range of exciting features including:

  • access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
  • a modern user-friendly interface
  • rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
  • the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review

The Challenge is open to all students from Year 7 to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for students to read a set number of books by 17 September 2021.

Students from Year 7 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books: ten books from the PRC List and 5 free choice.  All students who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklist and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

If you would like to participate in this year’s Challenge you can also see April, Richard or Diana in the library.

Introducing our new library team member

Hello,

My name is Richard Smallcombe. I have just joined the Library Team here at Northcote High until the end of the year.  I have worked for the last 17 years at Darebin Libraries mainly as a Customer Service Team Leader, and I live in Thornbury with my partner and her two children.

Yes, as a librarian I love to read! I read a lot of history, true crime, biographies, science fiction and fantasy. I will give most books a try, I will need to expand my reading in young adult and graphic novels to keep up with the students here at Northcote High.

I have had a fantastic welcome so far with a lot to learn in my first week, thank you to everyone for making me feel so welcome.

Welcome Richard!
