OUR Year 10 Music students had the pleasure of attending the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra’s (WASO) open rehearsal of their upcoming show The Great Romantics at the Perth Concert Hall.
The Great Romantics is a performance of three pieces from the Romantic era of Western Art music, the current topic our Year 10 Music students are learning in class this term.
We witnessed WASO rehearse the piece Le chasseur maudit (The Accursed Huntsman), a piece of Program Music written by French composer César Franck, which follows the story of a huntsman who dares to hunt on a Sunday morning (in violation of the Sabbath).
Prior to the rehearsal, students attended a pre-rehearsal talk with WASO’s Principal 3rd Horn player Robert Gladstones who gave insight into the piece, his life working with WASO,and a demonstration of his instrument the French Horn.
It was an eye-opening experience for students, as for many of our Year 10 Music students, it was their first time listening to a full-sized orchestra in a live format.
All of our Year 10 Music students enjoyed the performance, and have a heightened understanding of the appeal and popularity that Western Art music holds today.
