Exploring Bushfires and Beaches

Year 11 Mundaring trip

ON Friday, March 17, the Year 11 Geography ATAR students visited the Hills Discovery Centre in Mundaring to see firsthand the effects bushfires can have on both natural and human environments.

Fieldwork such as measuring fuel load and canopy cover was conducted at both wildfire and prescribed burn sites. Students then used this data to examine and compare levels of biodiversity and to understand the reasons for conducting prescribed burns as a way of mitigating the effects of bushfires.

Students finished the day with a visit to Mundaring Weir and were even lucky enough to see a kangaroo! All students thoroughly enjoyed their day. A big thank you to Miss Pisconeri for attending the excursion.

Year 8 Cape Peron excursion

IN Week 7, Year 8 Humanities students participated in an excursion to Cape Peron, to investigate and develop a better understanding of coastal processes and landforms.

Students took part in observations to develop their understanding of coastal processes, such as erosional and depositional landforms, and how these have shaped the WA coastline for centuries. Students were tasked with recording these observations in a fieldwork booklet, bracing the variety of weather conditions across the week.

In addition, students were able to develop their fieldwork skills, including annotated sketches, data collation and social observations to name a few. The students had a wonderful time and it was a pleasure to see the continued development of their geographical knowledge and skills.
