Welcome Rebecca Baldassarri, who has joined the Visual Art’s team this term with some of our 1/2 and 3/4 classes. The kids are delighted to again be having art once a week and are looking forward to next week when their classes will begin to run in the second Visual Arts room. The room has finally received its long-awaited furniture and will soon begin buzzing with our young artists!

AHPS Visual Arts Competition, 2022!

Our Visual Art's Captains have been hard at work already, creating and voting for the winners of our first art competition for 2022. This first contest was designed by Prabhleen, who has given students a portrait challenge. A perfect competition, as students all had experience with portraits in Term 1 and now get to put their knowledge into practice. There were no rules, except that students’ must draw the work themselves and try their hardest! To be eligible, all competition entries needed to be returned to Suzie in Art Room 1 by 11am, Friday the 27th of May.

Salam, Prabhleen and their helpers took great pride in choosing the winners of the art competition. It was interesting to hear them discuss and debate which ones they liked most and why. Questions were raised, asking if the artworks met the rule of being a portrait, to if the winners should have used colour or if only greylead was acceptable, and if so why! Discussion was had over tracing versus drawn images, how much effort was put into the entry and if students showed creativity. It was a very thought-out discussion that the captains took very seriously. They genuinely found it hard to decide and felt empathy to all the contestants missing out, after how hard they had all tried!

We commend every student that submitted an entry and can’t wait to see what students come up with in our next competition. Congratulations to everyone that entered and to our following winners:

Wednesday Art Club

Art Club will be running on Wednesdays in STEAM 1, for the remainder of Term 2 and Term 3. Start time is 1:40pm, until the end of lunch. To enter, student’s need 5 CARE tickets. Club will be run by the Visual Art’s Captains.

Zart Student Art Competition.

Zart Art are once again having their yearly student competition, with this year’s theme being ‘This is My Environment’. Opening on the 1st of June, 2022. Students are encouraged to create either 2D or 3D art, focused around the theme and submit their Entry to Zart Art. There are lots of prize give aways, entry is free and all submitted entries will be available for viewing in the online gallery. Keep your eyes posted on the website for further details, closer to the entry date.

In Our Communities...

Luna & Argus Communities (Preps)

Texture, clay and paint have been a focus of Art, this term for prep students! They’ve experimented with different ways of adding texture to 2D and 3D art and begun building up a vocabulary for describing the way art can feel and look. Clay has been a highlight for most students, even for those that made clay pendants that didn’t make it home (airdry clay unfortunately breaks very easily). They enjoyed the experience of making and painting them and came up with lots of words to describe the feeling of clay.

Argus, Xenica & Ulysses Communities (Year 1&2)

It’s all about emotions in Art for Year 1&2. They’ve been learning how art can express what someone is feeling through facial expression, colour, shape and pattern. First, student’s read the book ‘Happy’ by Mies van Hout, before experimenting with drawing their own images to express different emotions. They have been learning to associate different colours and shapes to certain feelings and discussing the reasons for their choices. Currently they are in the process of creating their own ‘Emotion Monster’, that they first designed using the knowledge they learnt about feelings and art. Students are currently working on the base of their sculptures from recycled materials.

Apollo & Icarus Communities (Year 3&4)

Students have combined their Inquiry topic with art by designing their own aliens that harness the sun’s energy! They got very inventive with their creations, coming up with some wonderful ideas about how to power up their aliens. They’ve now started to build the armatures of their creature, learning that an armature is like a skeleton! It will be the base layer of the sculpture they have very excitedly been working on. I know they are thrilled to share their progress in the next Newsletter, so watch this space!

Monarch Community (Year 5&6)

The Year 5&6's have worked hard to complete their graffiti projects. They were proud of the end results and looked forward to putting them on display in the library. Students explored lettering, using contrasting colours to make their words 'pop’, construction and experimenting with painting techniques and using clay. It was a long project, but they've acquired a lot of different skills they will be able to apply to future art projects!

They've continued this term, exploring different street artists and styles, and are beginning to create a class mural to paint on the widows! This is an artwork they have been excited to create for two years, after seeing previous Year 5&6s do a similar activity.
