Monarch Community Report

Issue 11

Welcome to the 5/6 Monarch Community for 2022

Greetings 5/6 Parents.

5/6A:

This Term we have been doing science experiments about solids, liquids and gas. On the first week Trent's class 5/6A did a Sandpit Volcano Eruption. We used a 1/3 of a water bottle then added vinegar and baking soda.

On the 16/5/22 our class did a science experiment called the "Sandpit Volcano Experiment." We did hypothesis, a diagram and even a method! Honestly it was really fun to experiment with Science. We really were looking forward to the results. We needed baking powder and a bottle in the process. Overall the results were amazing! It was really cool and at the end it was brilliant.

5/6B:

This term the 5\6 Monarch community have been learning about the 3 states of matter, Solid, Liquids and Gases. This term we will be doing 5 experiments, one with each 5\6 teacher.

One of the experiments we did was making Oobleck. Oobleck is both a Solid and a Liquid. When you put it in your hands and add force to it becomes a Solid but if you let go it becomes a Liquid.

While we were making the Oobleck we realised we needed to add more corn flour, after a few more minutes of mixing, it turned to OOBLECK! We played with each groups Oobleck and after the class was a MESS! But it was VERY fun.

The results were that Oobleck is very messy, sticky and very fun but also really easy to make! You should try it at home.  Many of us had a correct hypothesis that Oobleck is two states of matter, a Liquid and Solid.

We each had to write a science report about Oobleck.

Make sure you make it outside, our classroom was a total mess after we finished playing with the Oobleck!

5/6C:

This term the 5\6 Monarch community have been learning about the 3 states of matter, Solid, Liquids and Gases. This term we will be doing 5 experiments, one with each 5\6 teacher.

One of the experiments we were investigating in, was how much gas is in 3 different types of soft drink.

We would measure on kitchen scales each type of soft drink before opening it. We then shook each drink to let out all the gas we possible could when we opened it. We then re-measured each soft drink. We recorded our findings on a table to help us investigate which soft had more gas.

Friendly Reminders

Please remember:

  • It is important to have a water bottle each day and that it is labelled.
  • Please ensure your children are attending school as  ‘It is not ok to be away’.
  • Students complete 15 minutes of reading and 15 minutes of numeracy home work each night.
  • Students are to record their home reading in their school diaries with a signature. This needs to be returned to school each day.
  • Brain Food is fruit or vegetable snacks that children may eat in class. It is important to include this as an additional snack in their lunch box.

We look forward to a wonderful year working together with students and their families.
