Luna Community Report
Term 1, 2022
We would like to say a huge thank you to the families that attended parent information night on 16th of May. We appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to learn more about your child’s learning and school routines. It was great to see many families interested in their child’s education and we look forward to continuing to form partnerships with you all.
If you were unable to attend please see your child's mentor teacher if you would like a print out of the presentation.
Our community of readers in Luna are practicing reading by saying and blending the sounds in words, looking at the picture to help us solve a word and using our comprehension strategies to understand what we are reading. We explore a diverse range of strategies such as making connections; for example, "this book is about a dog, I have a dog her name is fluffy, I made a text to self connection" . We discuss character feelings and use evidence from the text to explain our thinking. When practicing reading at home it would be great for all students to answer some questions about the story they are reading/being read.
These questions may sound like: what do you think the character felt here? why?
What might happen next?
How do the characters feel about each other? how do you know?
Is the story like anything from your life/experiences?
The Luna student authors use repetition to develop their letter formation. By working on letter formation students can use these letters in their writing. We have introduced writer's notebook with the Luna community. Writers notebook is an opportunity for students to write and express their own ideas at their own pace, showing their skills as an author. We are learning to spell high frequency words such as: was, here, I, like, said, the and is. If students could practice these at home that would be great for their learning.
In maths this term we have been learning about making ‘ty’ numbers such as 10, 20, 30, 40 etc. The Luna students are working on reading, counting to and making these numbers using different materials such as unifix blocks, bundling sticks and counters. For our non- number focus we are learning about using informal lengths of measurement, measuring the duration of time it takes to do a task and making patterns using shapes. We are now learning about the tricky teens; 12, 13, 14, 15 etc. The Luna students are developing their understanding of what makes up a teen number (1 group of ten and some ones). Well done Luna student for being great mathematicians and always trying your best in maths!
In SEL, the little people in Luna have learnt about how important it is to have a growth mindset to be able to learn well. They have also used this growth mindset to tackle individual and group activities, eagerly cheering on their friends who needed more encouragement. The children have also been understanding what stress is and the effects it can have on their bodies.
Using their 5 senses, the Luna Community children explore the environment around them and identify objects using their senses of hearing and smell. Inquiry lessons this session were student-led. By answering the question, “What do I want to learn?”, we found out that the children were very interested in clouds and the weather. In learning about clouds and the weather, they have done cloud observations, made our own cloud and experimented to make a rain cloud in a jar. We’ve also talked about the different types of clouds and weather.
Each fortnight we will have a Prep - 2 assembly on Friday. Each mentor group will have one student who will be the student of the week. The student of the week is chosen by who is displaying ‘the caring for values’.
Congratulations to Ayla, Matin and Arnish for showing the ‘caring for values’.
