Careers

Careers events in 2023 have been on the go since day one this year. The careers office has an open door policy for the students and their parents to get the advice as they need to look into their future career pathways.

Already this year, we have had visits to the school by the University Roadshow outlining the opportunities available at Newcastle, UNE, CSU and SCU as well as recently the Australian Defence Force giving an insight into a career in either the Army Navy or Air Force.

KHS has taken Year10 Students to the Careers Expo in Maitland which was a huge success for those who attended gaining important information from a variety of Registered Training Organisations and Employment agencies. At the beginning of June Year 10 students were also given the opportunity to participate in the annual Speed Careering event in the school gym whereby the students moved around in a clockwise movement from one Employment presentation to another in blocks of 10 mins.

During Careers classes, students have been undertaking activities through Canvas lessons ranging from creating a USI (www.usi.gov.au), activating their Students Online account with NESA (https://studentsonline.nesa.nsw.edu.au/) and completing their School To Work Transition Survey which is a plan to help the Careers teamwork with the students on their future aspirations. With Subject selections coming up in Term 3 this information in the STW plan is essential in mapping the correct pathway whether it being staying at school for the HSC or undertaking further training gaining a qualification from the range of levels on the AQF framework.

Please keep any eye out for EVET (External Vocational Educational Training) courses for 2024 when released in Term 3. As part of your child’s HSC, they can undertake a VET course at TAFE and get both an Australian Qualification and their HSC. These courses can include Animal Care, Beauty, Electrotechnology, Drone flying to name a few. The list is very long with courses. Most recently a group of year 10 students went to Kurri Tafe for a tour to see what courses are on offer at our local campus .

SBATs, School Based Traineeships are also available and we have discussed these in Careers lessons, be sure to reach out if you want more information. If your child in Yr10 is interested in becoming a Nurse, they need to look at the following SBAT advertisement that was emailed to them in the beginning of June. Click here for more information http://www.hnehealth.nsw.gov.au/Careers/Pages/School-based-training-program.aspx

Each applicant needs to come speak with Mr McKinley before applying.

Please feel free to contact Mr McKinley our Careers Adviser if you would like to discuss your child’s future, whether it be for Work Experience, School Based Traineeships, subject selections, Early Entry/UAC applications and TAFE. As mentioned before please make contact and I will get back to you ASAP.
