KAWUL – TRAVEL TRAINING
This term, as part of our Community Access program, Kawul began their travel training. The class learnt how to read a timetable and had an energetic walk to the bus stop to catch the bus from Lang Street to Greenhills. They boarded the bus safely, enjoying the trip and as part of their study of financial mathematics, purchased morning tea when they arrived at Greenhills. A great time was had by all!
WUWING TANILBA BAY EXCURSION
Wuwing class enjoyed an excursion to Tanilba Bay as part of our Science unit of work The Living World. We travelled along the accessible boardwalk looking for invertebrates and checking the growth structure of mangroves, eucalypts and paperbarks. We saw many different birds, including a huge flock of Black Swans. We finished the day off with a barbeque!
BOCCIA
On Thursday 25th May, 5 students from Kuta Kaya travelled to Maitland Basketball Stadium to compete in the Boccia competition. It was a fabulous day with great teamwork, skill development and sportsmanship on display. Well Done to Jayden, Jordon, Lilly-Kendra, Cooper and Shauna for their achievements. They finished in 7th place with a final win over Cessnock High School 6 – 1.
SOCCER
Kuta Kaya students entered a team into the Term 2 Lunch Time Soccer Competition. They played 4 games, we won 1 game and had 3 loses. The students had a great time, were respectful to their opponents, showed lots of resilience against some tough competition and quickly developed a strong fan base. Congratulations to the following students Lucas McDonald, Jed Singer, Claire Purkiss-Locke, Mitchell McIntosh, Jayden O’Brien, Tyler Sawyers, Caleb Van Ommen, Cooper James, Shauna Watson, Caiden Johnston, Zayel Cosgrove and Steve Alexander.
DISABILITY EXPO
Pintu and Warikal visited the Disability Expo at the Entertainment Centre in Newcastle. When we arrived, it was 9.01am and the first thing we saw was an Assistance Animal area with two horses, two lovely dogs, a duck and a specially trained assistance Lama named Ben. Upon entering into the main expo, the students spilt into groups to explore. Each vendor at the expo focused on disability support options. Soon everyone was communicating and talking to vendors and obtaining life skills information for the future. After a brief rest break, we were on our way to lunch, which everyone enjoyed and sat around talking about how good the expo was and how much they loved the event swag they obtained. Upon arrival back at school everyone on the trip was thanked for their wonderful participation, showing that Kurri Kurri Kuta-Kaya Unit has some great students, that can interact with vendors and people in the community.
WHITE CARD COURSE
A group of 11 of our Kuta-kaya Stage 5 and 6 students recently completed the White Card Course. They were taught basic work safety skills and skills for construction sites. They were attentive all day and all passed the course, ready for some work experience. Thanks to Snowy Hydro who supplemented the cost of the course. Well done, Kuta-kaya students!
