Literacy

It has been inspiring to see students use their thinking skills to develop prequels and sequels to our mentor text Fox. They brainstormed a variety of ideas with their peers before drafting their narratives. Students used choice and voice to tell the story through the eyes of the fox, magpie or dog. They worked through the writing process to revise and edit their drafts.

Students further explored the mentor text Fox by creating a Found Poem. They selected striking vocabulary to highlight and create a poem within the text. Their creativity with their word selection was engaging to read. They illustrated the background with images and patterns that resemble their poem.

Numeracy

Place Value has been the focus where students have been developing and consolidating their understanding. They have been applying this knowledge to solve a variety of problems. They have utilised MAB manipulative, comparing and ordering, rounding, number lines, rhymes and watched videos and attended focus groups  to assist their learning.

The big hit over the last couple of weeks has been the introduction of TimeTables Rock Star! Students have been creating their avatars and stage names like, Colby Beck, Rocky Handy, Sky Carter, Blessing Presley, Taylor Riddle, Ace Snider, while practising their recall of multiplication facts. As they complete the different sections, students earn coins to upgrade their 'kits' all the while improving their knowledge and fluency of multiplication facts.

Students in 4C exclaim:

  • 'I love how it keeps track of what times tables I need to practise'

  •  'I love earning coins when I get the facts right'

  • 'I'm earning coins while having fun learning my times tables'

  • 'When I earn coins for knowing my facts I can buy a cool guitar'

  • 'The Heat Map shows my progress since I last played'

  • 'Best Maths Game Ever!'

  • Miss Taliana can I play TTRS??? I've finished all my work!  Please???

Inquiry

The Year 4's made connections to an inquiry journey by using images as analogies to better understand and deepen their thinking. They explored through discussions what is involved when undertaking an inquiry and to be curious and ask questions throughout the process to

As part of an inquiry journey, students began aspects of researching by being exposed to a variety of note taking methods to build skills and confidence to record relevant information. They watched a Kid President video and took notes that were relevant to the question 'What does it take to be a hero?' and no, it wasn't about Spiderman!. They had the opportunity to gain knowledge about our school House Captain - Evonne Goolagong, Kyle Vander Kuyp, Adam Goodes and Cathy Freeman by choosing a style of note taking that suited them, promoting agency and choice. Next steps in their inquiry journey, is to research someone they admire and note down positive qualities, values and traits that person embodies, supporting this by providing examples from that person's life.

Dance

Ready Set Dance! The Year Fours have been getting their groove on in the Dance Studio with Mr H over the last couple of weeks. They have been risk takers trying out new moves and practising their communication skills by listening and following along to the beats. Students have engaged in building routines step by step, breaking them down and then putting them together.  The enthusiasm from the students has been fantastic to see. Students are encouraged to wear their PE uniform on the day they have Dance.
