Supporting Our Students:
Building Resilience in Young People
At Saltwater, we recognise that learning to cope with challenges is an important part of growing up. Young people regularly face setbacks - whether it’s friendship difficulties, academic pressures, or feeling disappointed when things don’t go as planned. While these experiences can be tough, they also provide valuable opportunities for students to develop confidence and problem-solving skills over time.
Resilience is not about “toughing it out” or avoiding difficult emotions. Instead, it involves helping young people understand that mistakes, setbacks and challenges are a normal part of life. When students feel supported to work through these experiences, they are more likely to build the skills needed to manage future challenges in a healthy and positive way.
Families play an important role in supporting the development of these skills.
At home, this can look like:
Encouraging effort rather than focusing only on outcomes
Supporting your child to reflect on challenges and what they might try differently next time
Allowing space for problem-solving, rather than stepping in immediately.
Validating emotions while also guiding your child towards possible solutions
Reminding young people that setbacks are temporary and part of learning
How Saltwater P-9 Can Help
At school, our wellbeing team supports students to build emotional awareness, coping strategies and confidence when facing challenges. This may include individual check-ins, small group programs, and opportunities to develop social and problem-solving skills in a supportive environment.
We understand that every young person responds to challenges differently, and we aim to provide a safe space where students feel heard, supported and empowered to keep trying, even when things feel difficult.
If you have any concerns about your child’s wellbeing, please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher, who can work alongside our wellbeing team to determine the most appropriate next steps.
By working together, we can help our young people build the skills they need to navigate challenges, learn from setbacks, and continue to grow with confidence.
