Year Six

It has been a busy and exciting couple of weeks in Year Six as we moved through Weeks 7 and 8. Students began exploring our Unit of Inquiry: Where We Are in Place and Time, while continuing to develop their skills in reading, writing and mathematics. Throughout the fortnight, students engaged in historical thinking, narrative writing and number investigations, alongside enjoying the final sessions of our Year 6 Beach Program.

Where We Are in Place and Time

Over the past two weeks, Year 6 students explored our Unit of Inquiry: Where We Are in Place and Time, investigating how historical events, perspectives and experiences shape the world we live in today. As part of the tuning in phase of our inquiry, students were introduced to the central idea and participated in provocations designed to spark curiosity about historical events and perspectives. Students also began generating their own questions and wonderings, which were added to our class Wonder Wall to help guide our learning throughout the unit.

Reading

Students explored historical narratives, learning how authors combine fictional storytelling with real historical events and contexts. We examined the features of historical narratives, compared them with factual historical texts and investigated how authors represent time, place and significant events.

Students also explored perspective and voice, identifying whose viewpoints were included in historical accounts and whose voices may have been missing. They compared how different groups may have experienced the same historical event.

Students also developed their research skills, learning how historians gather information. They practised recording notes using key words and bullet points and learned how to identify reliable sources, including books, trusted websites and databases.

Writing

In writing sessions, students focused on creating vivid historical settings. They learned how to describe places from the past using sensory language and historical detail, helping readers imagine what life may have been like in a different time period.

Students also developed their understanding of voice and character, exploring how narratives can be told from different perspectives. Later in the fortnight, students applied these skills by writing a short historical narrative retelling an event from a character’s viewpoint.

Students also reflected on their writing using the class writing rubric, identifying personal writing goals to continue improving their work.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students continued exploring Number Properties.

During Week 7, students investigated square numbers and triangular numbers, identifying patterns and making connections between these special number sequences.

In Week 8, students focused on multiplying and dividing decimals by powers of 10. Students explored how place value changes when numbers are multiplied or divided by 10, 100 and 1000, and applied their understanding through problem-solving tasks.

Ramadan

Students in Year 6 were also fortunate to learn more about Ramadan, thanks to Diala, Maha and Layla from 6A. The girls worked collaboratively to create and present an informative presentation to their peers, explaining the significance of Ramadan, daily practices such as fasting, and how it is celebrated by Muslim families around the world. It was wonderful to see them confidently share their knowledge and help build understanding and respect within our learning community.

Congratulations Miss Taylor!

We would also like to congratulate Miss Taylor, teacher of 6I, who graduated on Tuesday 17th March. This is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of her hard work and dedication. We are very proud to celebrate this special milestone with her and are lucky to have her as part of our Year 6 team.

Beach Program

Students also concluded their Year 6 Beach Program at Williamstown Beach. Throughout the program, students participated in a range of activities designed to build confidence, teamwork and water safety skills. They learned important first aid, beach and pool safety practices, and enjoyed trying nipper boards and beach games. It was fantastic to see students supporting one another, stepping outside their comfort zones and making the most of this unique learning experience by the water.

Overall, Weeks 7 and 8 were filled with meaningful learning experiences and opportunities for students to challenge themselves both in and out of the classroom. It has been wonderful to see students showing curiosity, resilience and teamwork throughout their learning and activities. Students also demonstrated strong inquiry skills, asking thoughtful questions about history and collaborating with peers to explore different perspectives. We look forward to continuing our inquiry and building on these skills in the final two weeks of term.

Warm regards,

The Year Six Team
