Year Five

Welcome to Week Eight!
It has been a busy and rewarding fortnight in Year Five. We are incredibly proud of the resilience and strong self-management skills students demonstrated while preparing for and completing NAPLAN. Now that NAPLAN is behind us, we are excited to continue our learning journey and build on the skills students have developed.
Congratulations to our newly appointed Class Captains.
Students participated in voting for the Junior School Council (JSC), and we eagerly await the results.

Literacy
Throughout the fortnight, students focused on preparing for NAPLAN by developing key reading comprehension skills. They practised identifying the main idea and analysing the author’s purpose across a variety of texts. Students also strengthened their research and note-taking skills while exploring both world leaders and Australian leaders.
As part of this learning, students engaged with the mentor text, 'If I Was Prime Minister', completing a range of reading responses to deepen their understanding of perspective and purpose. It has been wonderful to see students becoming more confident in articulating their thinking and making connections between texts.
Unit of Inquiry – Who We Are (Leadership)
In connection with our unit on Leadership, students explored what it means to be an effective leader by examining a range of influential figures from around the world. They investigated the qualities of leaders such as Greta Thunberg, who advocates for the environment, and Muhammad Ali, recognised as a leader in sport, as well as leaders featured on Australian currency and from diverse fields.
Students also engaged with the Little People, Big Dreams series, selecting a leader who inspired them and writing a biography to showcase their understanding. It has been fantastic to see students making thoughtful connections and reflecting on the qualities they admire in leaders.
Inspired by current issues prevalent in the world, students also explored how individuals and groups take action to create change. They demonstrated their understanding by creating powerful slogans and protest signs to raise awareness about causes they feel passionate about. It has been wonderful to see students thoughtfully engage with real-world issues and use their voice to advocate for change.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students revised a range of concepts in preparation for NAPLAN, including shape, location and coordinates, chance, and place value. They applied their knowledge through problem-solving tasks and practised explaining their reasoning clearly.
Students have also begun working on a Mathematics project titled What is a Leader?, which integrates their inquiry learning while revising key concepts such as fractions, decimals and place value. We look forward to seeing their creativity and understanding develop through this project.
