Year Two

Dear Year Two Families, the Grade Twos have settled into the school year so well! We have been exploring some exciting units around our central idea of 'people express important events through celebrations and traditions.'

Writing:

In Writing, students have been exploring Read and Retell, we have been so fortunate enough to be Mentored by the lovely Jim Kinniburgh. Students get to experience a read aloud, look at pictures on the board and then write their own retell about the story! They have been focusing on leads including character and setting leads in which they have to describe with has helped them  developed sentence structure.

Reading:

In Reading, students have been exploring and comparing a range of celebrations from our community and around the world. These include Christmas, Eid, Diwali, and Chinese New Year. Through discussions and texts, students are learning about the different traditions, values, and perspectives connected to these celebrations, while also identifying similarities and differences between them.

Wellbeing:

During Wellbeing, students are learning how to regulate their emotions by developing a “Ready to Learn” plan. They are exploring strategies they can use when they feel heightened or angry, such as practising belly breathing or visiting the calm corner in the library to help themselves settle and refocus. Students have also been discussing how to use their bodies safely in the school yard and how to make safe choices while playing with others.

Maths:

In Maths, students are learning how to represent 3-digit numbers using place value. They are exploring how hundreds, tens, and ones work together to make numbers and practising how to read and say 3-digit numbers correctly. Students are also developing their understanding of number sequences by identifying the number that comes before and after a given number. Through a range of activities and discussions, they are building confidence in recognising, representing, and working with larger numbers.
