Re thinking waste

At Hillsmeade Primary we continue to think about ways we can minimise waste, this is not just plastics waste, this also includes our food waste.

We are proud to have changed from disposable, single use cups, at breakfast club to our reusable cups and cutlery. We are also in the process of installing composting cones in our vegetable garden - these composting cones will be used to dispose of our breakfast club food scraps, fruit break scraps and any lunchbox leftovers.

Composting week is fast approaching in May, and is a great chance for households to take a closer look at how well they get rid of their food waste - most often food scraps are emptied into the landfill bin, this causes the release of harmful gases in landfill as the food scraps begin to compost and break down. A far better way of disposing of food scraps is in the compost bin. Households in the City of Casey can receive a FOGO (food organic, grass organic) bin and they will take care of the composting.
