Our Learning

Welcome back to Term 2! We are excited to share the wonderful learning experiences our Year 5 students have had over the past two weeks.

Week 1: Exploring Information Texts and ANZAC Day

In Week 1, our focus was on understanding and creating information texts. We began by learning about the significance of ANZAC Day. Students explored the historical context of ANZAC Day, understanding its importance and the events of 1915 at Gallipoli. We discussed why ANZAC Day is commemorated each year and the traditions associated with it, such as the Dawn Service and the marches. This exploration helped students appreciate the sacrifices made by the ANZACs and the importance of remembering them.

Week 2: Delving into Information Texts and Asian Animals

In Week 2, we continued our journey with information texts by examining their features and structure. Students learned to identify key elements such as headings, subheadings, and the use of factual language. To make this learning engaging, we focused on researching Asian animals. Each student selected an animal to research, which allowed them to apply their understanding of information texts in a practical and interesting way.

Mathematics: Addition Strategies

In Mathematics, we commenced our unit on addition. The focus has been on developing strategies such as rounding and the jump strategy to enhance students' addition skills. These strategies help students perform mental calculations more efficiently and understand the underlying concepts of addition.

Humanities: Social Justice

Our Humanities lessons have been centred around the theme of Social Justice, with a particular focus on poverty, equality, and equity. We were very impressed with the thoughtful discussions and insights our students shared. These conversations are crucial in helping students develop a deeper understanding of social justice issues and the importance of fairness and equality in society.

Family-Teacher Conversations

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the families who participated in the family-teacher conversations. These meetings are invaluable as they provide an opportunity for open dialogue about students' learning and progress. Your support and involvement are greatly appreciated.

We look forward to continuing this term with more exciting and enriching learning experiences. Thank you for your ongoing support!

Warm regards,

The Year 5 Teaching Team
