From the Year 1 Classroom

Hello Grade 1 families! It is crazy to think that this is our final newsletter for the term! We have been super busy with our excursion, Sacred Heart Day, Tabloid Sports and our Bunnings visit!  

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Gyles for working with us for her final teaching round. We have loved having Miss Gyles’ friendly face as a part of our learning spaces! Thank you! We know you will make a great teacher, and we hope to see you back at Sacred Heart one day!  

We are also very excited to be learning AUSLAN with Mrs Richardson on Tuesdays beginning in Term 3!  

Reminders- Just a reminder that as a whole school we are working on our morning routine of putting our bags away, doing our jobs and heading out to play. If you could please reinforce this in the mornings also, we would be very appreciative. Thank you!  

Readers- Please remember to bring in home readers on a Friday. Children should be reading two books a week, focusing on accuracy and fluency. Each night, we aim to add more voice and expression using the punctuation to help. For the holidays, please continue to read interesnt books from home and the Library! 

📝Literacy- 

In our Literacy lessons, we have continued to focus on various concepts and skills, such as revision of verbs, nouns, proper nouns, adjectives, conjunctions (joining words) and plurals! We have also learnt about suffixes.  

In Writing, we have continued to explore the parts of a narrative (beginning, middle and end).  

• In the beginning we need to include: who, when, where. 
• In the middle we need to include:the take off (problem), how the character/s are feeling and an idea to solve the problem,and 2 actions to solve the problem.  
• In the end we need to include: the solution and the consequence (or lesson learnt) 

We have also moved into learning about Procedural Writing. We had a very special Procedural Writing lesson where we listed all the materials/things we need and the steps for a farewell party for our student teacher, Miss Gyles! We had so much fun!  

⭐Graphs, Digraphs & Trigraphs we are learning: 

ew/ue- /ew/ as in grew and /ue/ as in glue 

ar-  /ar/ as in star 

or/ore- /or/ as in fork and /ore/ as in snore 

ir/ur- /ir/ as in stir and /ur/ as in surf 

er- /er/ as in fern 

⭐ Tricky Words we are learning:

Over the past fortnight, we have introduced Addition and Subtraction and explored the symbols and language that represent these concepts.  

. 

We have continued to explore the difference between two numbers. We can count on from a collection to find the difference and we can count back from a collection to find the difference.  

We have also explored finding the ‘difference’ using a number line and number bonds, eg. We know that we need to add 3 more from 10 to make 13, so the difference is 3. We can also represent this in a number bond.  

💙Religion – Grief and Loss 

Our Religion lessons have continued to explore the concept of grief and loss as a part of our lives.  

🌍 Inquiry- Geography-Places and Connections  

Our Inquiry lessons have focused on our connection to where we live. We will explore the various natural and man-made environments where we live and how we interact with our environment.
