From the Year 6 Classroom
Dear Parents and Families,
As we approach the end of Term 2, Year 6 continues to thrive with exciting learning, leadership opportunities, and community involvement.
Literacy
We have begun a new focus on Poetry in Literacy. Students are analysing poetic craft, with a particular focus on the poem The Soft Rains Will Come, by Banjo Patterson. They are learning how poets use imagery, rhythm, and structure to create mood and meaning, and are beginning to experiment with some poetry writing of their own.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, we are continuing our unit on decimals. The students are recognising that the base ten place value system can be extended to decimals (tenths, hundredths and thousandths), to represent parts of whole numbers. calculation strategies can be applied to addition and subtraction of decimal numbers.
Religious Education
In Religion, our Year 6 students have been exploring the powerful message of Reconciliation through their Religious Education learning. They have examined the importance of building respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians, while reflecting on themes of justice, healing, forgiveness, and unity. Through discussions, prayer, artwork, and learning about First Nations perspectives, students have developed a deeper understanding of how they can contribute to a more inclusive and reconciled Australia. As people of faith, they are encouraged to be active participants in creating a community where everyone is valued, respected, and heard.
Inquiry – A Diverse and Connected World
As we wrap up this unit, the students are enjoying the ‘Sudden and Extreme Changes to Earth’s Surface' unit, where they will investigating major geological and extreme weather-related events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, drought, bushfires, floods and cyclones.
Leadership Positions Semester Two
Thank you to the students who applied for the Semester 2 School Captain. We had many students apply for the positions. We would like to congratulate Lola Watts and Maisie Cooper who were the successful candidates.
Recent Highlights
Regional Cross Country: A special congratulations to Stevie O’Shannassy, who competed in the Regional Cross Country last Friday and performed exceptionally well. We are very proud of her fabulous achievement. Congratulations also to those students who will be progressing to the next level—what a fantastic effort by all!
Sacred Heart Day/Tabloid Sports:
Last Friday we gathered to celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart with Sacred Heart College students. It was a fabulous celebration with the highlight the singing of a new song ‘Lift Up Your Hearts’. The Yr 6 students thoroughly enjoyed leading the Tabloid Sports. They displayed great leadership qualities and ensured all of the students and teachers had a great time.
