From the Year 4 Classroom

The holidays are nearly here, and what a busy and successful term it has been. Students should be very proud of the effort and dedication they have shown across all areas of learning. We hope everyone enjoys a safe, relaxing, and well-deserved holiday break. 

Congratulations to the students who competed at the Divisional Cross Country last week. A special mention goes to Jack Cummins, who has progressed through to the State Championships. This is a fantastic achievement, and we wish him every success as he prepares for this exciting event. 

Celebration:                                                                                                                                                                Next Thursday, we will celebrate the sacramental children and the end of a wonderful term. We would appreciate it if your child could bring a small amount of food to share. Thank you. 

Literacy: 

We have begun drafting our fantasy narrative pieces, which students will type and publish next week. After completing our class novel, The Arrival, students will create their own stories inspired by Shaun Tan's storytelling style. Their narratives will include a fantasy creature and follow a character who is forced to leave their home and journey to a new land in search of a better life. We look forward to seeing the creativity and imagination students bring to their writing.  

Numeracy: This week, we have begun a new unit focusing on addition and subtraction. Students will be exploring fact families for subtraction, the commutative property of addition, and equivalent addition and subtraction number sentences. They have also completed their PAT Mathematics assessment this week, with many students achieving pleasing results. Please continue to practise multiplication facts at home, as regular revision will help build confidence and strengthen mathematical fluency. 

Religion: We have continued to look at the Circle of Life. Students have been given opportunities to reflect on how Jesus is with them in times of sadness, loss and trouble. They are also learning that we need to be there for others in their time of need. 

We are also learning about the Mercy Values — Respect, Hospitality, Compassion, Service, Courage and Justice. As a whole school, we are focusing on one value each week and exploring practical ways we can live out these values in our daily lives. 

PBIS Focus: We congratulate our Year 4 students on the excellent effort and behaviour they have demonstrated so far, particularly in line with this week’s PBIS focus. 

Be Safe – keeping hands, feet and objects to themselves, following the rules, and asking for adult help when needed. Be Respectful – using kind words, including others, and caring for people and property. Be Your Best – trying their hardest, making positive choices, learning from mistakes, and persevering when things feel challenging.
