Assistant Principal's Report

Thank you to all the families who attended our Information Evenings in the first weeks of Term 3. These sessions are such an important way to share our plans for the year ahead and to ensure families have a clear understanding of the programs and opportunities available to their children. Your engagement and support make a significant difference in setting students up for success in 2027.

We were also proud to welcome prospective families to our Years 8-12 Information Night. A special thank you goes to our Junior Ambassadors, who guided visitors through the school and showcased the vibrant learning community we have here. Their enthusiasm, confidence and pride in MGC truly shone through, and they should feel incredibly proud of the role they played in welcoming our future students.

Thank you to our Year 7 students who have submitted their language preferences for next year. Choosing a language is an exciting step in each student's learning journey, and we appreciate the thought that students and families have put into these decisions as we plan for 2027.

Congratulations to all our students who recently performed in our production of Back to the 80's: The Musical. From the singing to the staging, it was a wonderful celebration of student talent. The energy on stage was matched only by the enthusiasm in the audience, and I personally couldn’t stop singing along to so many tunes I enjoyed throughout my childhood! The commitment and creativity our students brought to their performances were a joy to watch, and everyone involved should be very proud.

Assistant Principal Years 7 - 8

Year 7

Yeeeehawwww! 100 Days of Year 7 was a boot-scooting bonanza! In Week 3, the fabulous Year 7s celebrated their first 100 days here at MGC. We reflected on the good times, the hard times, the growth, the adjustments and the laughs we shared over the first two terms.

We celebrated with a day packed full of fun. The Year 7s played trivia, watched a film and created their own rock pets to join their classroom families. They made and traded friendship bracelets in the spirit of International Friendship Day.

To top it all off, they heeled and toed, spun and swirled to some boot-scooting line dancing and donned some cowgirl costumes, just for the joy of it all.

It was a fabulous day for everyone involved, and we hope the Year 7s made some memories that will last a lifetime. We are very proud of the way they have settled into their new high school lives and how much effort they have put into their first 100 days of Year 7!

Year 8

Our Year 8 students have recently completed the subject selection process for Year 9, marking an exciting milestone as they look ahead to the next stage of their secondary schooling.

Year 9 offers students the opportunity to explore their interests and develop new skills through a diverse range of elective subjects alongside their core classes. Students can choose from exciting options including Architecture, Furniture Design and Creating Global Flavours, providing opportunities for creativity, practical learning and exploration in new areas.

We look forward to seeing our Year 8 students embrace these new opportunities as they begin their Year 9 journey and continue to discover their passions and strengths.

During the first week of the school holidays, eight students from Melbourne Girls’ College took part in the One Giant Leap and RMIT Space Teams Academy, joining 32 students from across Australia for an immersive week exploring space science, engineering and mission design.

Working in teams of four with students from different schools, participants were challenged to design a two-year space mission for four astronauts travelling to the exoplanet Vulcan. Throughout the week, students took part in lessons, collaborative design activities and sessions with expert guest speakers, developing their own planet, mission patch and plans for the mission.

A highlight of the program was hearing from Dr Greg Chamitoff, a former NASA astronaut, who shared his experiences aboard the International Space Station and provided students with insight into the realities of living and working in space.

The week concluded with a virtual reality tour of the International Space Station, as well as a series of hands-on challenges involving habitat construction and rocket landing simulations. The program provided students with an exciting opportunity to collaborate with young people from across Australia while developing their knowledge of space science, problem-solving, teamwork and mission design.
