Year 9 Visual Arts: Making the Ordinary Extraordinary

Inspired by assemblage artist Louise Nevelson, Year 9 Visual Arts students in Semester Two explored how ordinary, discarded objects can be transformed into powerful works of art. Through collecting, arranging and combining found materials, students created three-dimensional assemblages that tell stories, express ideas and encourage viewers to see everyday objects in new ways.

Drawing on Nevelson’s belief that every object holds history and meaning, students experimented with composition, texture, balance and unity to create artworks that move beyond their original function. By reimagining familiar materials, they discovered how artists can transform the ordinary into something extraordinary.

This collection celebrates creativity, resourcefulness and the power of art to find meaning in the overlooked.

Year 9: Reimagining Art in Three Dimensions

Building on their artwork investigations, Year 9 Visual Arts students from Semester One transformed their analytical understanding into creative three-dimensional responses. Using a folded ‘chatterbox’ format, students reinterpreted a chosen artwork, exploring how artists use visual conventions, materials and processes to communicate ideas. This project challenged students to move beyond analysis and into artmaking, demonstrating how creative reinterpretation can generate new perspectives and meanings.

The Year 9 Photography class has taken photographs using the elements of art as inspiration. Students have focused on composition and incorporated a range of viewpoints into their photographs.
