Italian Update
Salve a tutti! (Hello to everyone!)
Wow!! È l’ultima settimana di scuola per questo trimestre! (It’s already the last week of school for this term!)
As usual it has been a busy one for everyone...bambini, (children), insegnanti, (teachers) and genitori, (parents).
Just wanting to give an overview of what the children learnt in italiano this term, plus a few holiday activities you may be interested in doing with your children whilst they are in vacanze, (on holidays). 😊
Foundation
The children were introduced to learning the names of various body parts, through the story of Pinocchio. As well as learning about the names of the 5 senses and which body part we use for each sense. During the term we also celebrated cento giorni, (100 days), of being a scuola, (at school). Grade 2
These children were introduced to the topic of Cosa fai a scuola? (What do you do at school?) Here they learnt about various verbi (verbs), that they do at school. They expanded their vocabulary via gestures, games, songs, drawings and labelling activities. See the photos below…
Grades 3/4
These children learnt about Che tempo fa oggi? (What is the weather today?) Here they learnt the names of the seasons, as well as various weather conditions and language structures. This unit was a follow up to last term’s topic on days of the week and months. Revision of the language learnt is a key component throughout the term including online quizzes, namely Kahoot, which has proven to be quite popular with the children. See the smiling faces below…
Grades 5/6
This term the senior children have learnt about the Romans. They have broadened their historical knowledge in relation to when the Roman Empire first began and when it ceased to exist. The children have also learnt about Roman society, homes, everyday life, entertainment, including gladiators and have finished off the term by discussing Roman engineering and what impact it has had on modern society.
The children have participated in quizzes and group tasks as well as watched video clips and slide presentations to consolidate their learning. This topic has proven to be quite interesting for the children and will continue through to next term also.
This brings me to my final point in this newsletter article…I’d now like to bring your attention to some Italian holiday activities that will be taking place locally in Melbourne. Something that the grade 5/6 children may like to visit during the holidays, (if they haven’t seen it already), is the ROME: Empire, Power, People exhibition at the Melbourne Museum, see more details below but you will need to book in soon, for it will only be on for a few more weeks. I have heard positive feedback from numerous people that it is an amazing exhibition!
