Swimming

PE programs have begun with all students diving into Swimming.

We have a morning swim-squad training session taking place at Trinity College’s pool at 6.30am every Monday and Wednesday. This is open to any St George’s student who would like to improve their fitness and stroke technique. Milla Howard, our 2023 School Captain, has joined the Western Sprint Coaching Staff and it is fantastic to have her coach our students in the pool at Trinity this year.

Congratulations to all the students who have been consistently training in the mornings. Your organisation is impeccable!

All families are invited to attend the Interhouse Swimming Carnival on Thursday 22 February at Claremont Aquatics Centre. It is a fantastic day of swimming, novelty events and our St George’s unique “Sync Swim” event, where the lane ropes will be removed at 12pm for the Houses to dance it out in the pool.

Come along and see House camaraderie at its best! Students who excel in the races on the day will be selected in the 2024 D-Division ACC Team to compete at HBF Stadium on Friday 22 March.

For PE lessons, all Years 7-10 students have been travelling to UWA Aquatics Centre where we have been assessing swimming abilities and fitness levels. Students have been working well at improving their swimming abilities and have been well-organised with their necessary items. Swimming will continue into the week after the long weekend and finish on 8 March.

Surfing

The PE Department is also excited to include the beach in their programs this year, with Mr Conrad Sloan, introducing Surfing into the new Apex Outdoor Education (OE) program. Year 11s travel weekly to Brighton Beach near Scarborough where they learn to surf under the expert guidance of “Go Surf” instructors. Students had some magic conditions for their first lesson, as these pictures show, and we hope they get some barrels!

New Courses

The PE Department has introduced the following 2024 courses aimed to keep students physically and mentally strong:

  • APEX Year 11 Physical Education Studies
  • ATAR Year 11 Physical Education Studies
  • APEX Year 11 Outdoor Education Studies
  • APEX Year 12 Physical Education Studies
  • Year 7-10 Physical Education classes
  • Year 9 and 10 Outdoor Education electives.
  • Active for Wellbeing Years 9-12

Basketball

The ACC Basketball Championships begaun this week with our Junior Boys competing against John Septimus Roe. They play Mundaring Christian College next week and we wish Mr Gharsallah and the team well in their games. Our Senior Boys have begun training with Mr Sloan and begin their NWAS round-robin on Wednesday 28th February against Kingsway Christian College. The Junior and Senior Girls will compete in one-day carnivals on the 27 and 29 of February respectively.

Diving

Another new initiative has been driven by our very own expert diver, Miss Sadie Yoxall, who started her career as a gymnast and competed in diving as a student at St Mary’s when she was at school. We have called for expressions of interest for students to compete in School Sports WA (SSWA) Diving competition taking place at HBF Stadium on 27 March. Even if you have no experience in diving, all students are welcome to join our inaugural St George’s Diving team by putting their name down with Miss Yoxall. A background in gymnastics is advantageous.

Carnivals

Lastly, this term, Year 7-10 students will have the option of competing in the North Western Associated Schools’ (NWAS) One Day Carnivals where students will be bused to a variety of venues to play:

  • Girls Basketball
  • Boys Basketball
  • Ultimate Frisbee
  • Volleyball
  • Cricket.

In the coming weeks, all Year 7-10 students will be sent a Forms selection link to express their interest in representing the school in one of these sports.

  • Year 7-8 NWAS One-Day Carnival:  Tuesday 19th March
  • Year 9-10 NWAS One-Day Carnival:  Wednesday 20th March

See you all at Claremont Pool next week!
