Year 11 student Joss Walker has been chosen as a Black Swan Ambassador for 2024. Joss is one of three Year 11 students, selected from applicants across all age groups across the State, to work with industry professionals and attend workshops and shows at the State Theatre Centre for the whole year. Joss is pictured with fellow ambassadors. Way to go, Joss!
Class of 2023 graduate Odyssey Hetherington has been awarded a WA LEA (Leisure Employment Australia) Trainee of the Year Award. "Ozzy" was "very consistent throughout his whole traineeship, worked in numerous departments at the swim centre (and still does post completion), helped to cover countless shifts, particularly on weekends when we were short staffed and is just a lovely person'', WA Traineeship Manager of LEA School Based Traineeships, Ella McMillan, said.
Good luck to Year 7 student Fieke Potter who has been selected to represent WA in the 2024 Aquathlon Championship. The team will compete at the School Sport Australia National Championships in Rockingham next month.
Congratulations to St George’s Music Coordinator, Michael Newton, who has been invited to present at the Music Teachers in International Schools (MTIIS) & Music Futures International ‘Big Gig’ teachers’ conference in Mumbai, India from 14–22 March. The conference brings together a global community of teachers to play, sing, compose, arrange, produce, scratch, rap and improvise their way through practical workshops. Mr Newton will give a presentation on current trends in Music Technology & Production (such as sequencing, synthesis, sampling and using electronic devices as instruments) while gathering ideas for developing a contemporary and progressive curriculum that engages learners of all ages and prepares our students to become musicians.
During the trip Mr Newton will visit the Dharavi Dream Project, supported by the music manufacturer Roland. Dharavi is one of Asia’s largest slums and heavily dominated by violence and illiteracy. The Dharavi Dream Project was initiated to discover, nurture, and promote the Hip Hop talent from Dharavi and educate the youth through a distraction. The project has a simple goal; to give every child access to after-school HipHop where they can share their thoughts and express freely in the form of music, art and dance.
We look forward to sharing more details of this amazing opportunity for Mr Newton with you in later editions of The Dragon.
