Bonjour, dear parents and students!

We’ve had a great start to the term in French! Students have been demonstrating positive learning behaviours, staying focused, and bringing a wonderful energy to our French classes.

Here’s a snapshot of what each year level has been exploring during Weeks 3–4.

Prep

Students have been learning the names of family members in French and extending their vocabulary by exploring different animals.

Grade 1

Students have been learning to talk about food using « Je mange… » (I eat…) and to express their food preferences by sharing what they like and dislike in French.

Grade 2

Students have been practising asking and answering questions about the rooms of a house. They then created their own house blueprints and labelled each room in French. In the following week, students expanded their vocabulary by learning the names of different pieces of furniture and adding them to their blueprints.

Grade 3

Students have been learning the names of classroom objects and exploring how colours agree with nouns in gender. They then applied their knowledge of prepositions to describe the location of different objects. In the following week, students extended their number knowledge by learning to count from 1 to 60 in French.

Grade 4

Students have been extending their knowledge of weather by asking and answering questions about the weather and temperature. They have also been learning vocabulary for different pieces of furniture and applying their understanding of grammatical gender by using the correct forms of colours when writing paragraphs.

Grade 5

Students have been learning how to construct French sentences using grammatical terminology (metalanguage). They have been identifying different sentence components, including subjects, objects, adverbs, adjectives, and verbs. Students have also been developing their pronunciation skills by exploring common letter combinations and their sounds in French.

Grade 6

Students have been developing their French pronunciation by learning how different letter combinations are pronounced. They have also been introduced to the passé composé, the French past tense, and have begun exploring how to use it to talk about past events.

We look forward to another wonderful term of learning, communicating, and discovering the French language together!
