Grade 3 Community News

Dear Grade 3 families,
We hope Term 4 is off to a positive start for everyone! The students have continued to approach their learning with enthusiasm and perseverance as we build on the knowledge and skills developed throughout the year. Over the coming weeks, we will continue to explore new concepts, consolidate important skills and provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning across our curriculum.
English
In English, students have finished reading The Wild Robot by Peter Brown and are now undertaking assessment tasks to demonstrate their understanding of the novel and the reading skills they have developed throughout our unit. Students have explored the characters, events and themes within the story, strengthening their comprehension and inference skills along the way.
Following these assessments, we will begin our next novel study, His Name Was Walter by Emily Rodda. This text will provide opportunities for students to continue developing their comprehension, vocabulary, inference and analytical reading skills as they explore a new story.
Reminder: Please ensure your child has their own copy of His Name Was Walter by Emily Rodda to bring to school. Having a personal copy will allow students to follow along during lessons, revisit important passages and engage fully with our novel study.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students will continue developing their understanding of a range of mathematical concepts. Our upcoming focus areas include area and perimeter, where students will explore how to measure and calculate the space inside and the distance around shapes.
Students will also investigate three-dimensional objects, identifying their features and exploring the properties of different solids. In our work on money, students will apply their number skills to solve practical problems involving monetary amounts and calculations. We will also continue to develop students' confidence and accuracy with long division, using the steps of divide, multiply and subtract to solve increasingly challenging problems.
Across these topics, students will be encouraged to explain their mathematical thinking, show their working out and apply their knowledge to a range of problems.
Humanities
In Humanities, students will explore myths and legends, discovering how traditional stories have been used across different cultures to explain events, communicate beliefs and pass on important ideas and values. Students will examine the features of these stories and consider the messages they communicate, developing an understanding of how stories connect people to their history and culture.
We will also introduce the concept of primary sources. Students will learn that primary sources provide original evidence about the past, such as photographs, letters, diaries, objects and historical documents. They will explore how these sources can help us learn about people's lives and historical events, while considering how evidence can be used to develop our understanding of the past.
Reminders
- Novel study: Please ensure your child has their own copy of His Name Was Walter by Emily Rodda to bring to school to support their learning.
- SunSmart: As we move through the warmer months, all students are required to wear a hat when outside. Please ensure your child brings a labelled hat to school each day.
Reading at home: Regular reading at home continues to support students' fluency, vocabulary and comprehension development.
Thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to another fortnight of learning as our Grade 3 students continue to build their skills, explore new ideas and work towards their learning goals for Term 4.
Kind regards,
PLC3
