Grade 4 Community News

Dear Grade 4 Families,
As we progress further into the last term of this school year, Grade 4 students have been developing their confidence and understanding across a range of subjects. They have continued to engage in meaningful conversations about learning and practising the skills they need to participate effectively in lessons across the curriculum.
English
In English, students have finished reading our class novel, The Wild Robot, and have engaged in some wonderful class discussions exploring the characters, storyline and language features used by the author. They have also completed their persuasive letters, arguing the reasons why a robot could be beneficial at home! They have applied their knowledge of persuasive structures and literary devices to strengthen their arguments and engage their readers. The students have thoroughly enjoyed creating their letters, so be sure to ask them all about their writing! In Week 5, we will begin exploring narrative writing, with students developing their skills in creating imaginative stories. Also during this time, we will introduce our new class novel, His Name Was Walter, by Emily Rodda, which will provide plenty of opportunities for further discussion, comprehension and exploration of language that is used in narrative structures. We encourage families to provide students with physical copies of our class novel where possible.
Maths
As always, students are continuing to develop a wide range of mathematical skills. Our carefully planned daily retrieval slides help students revisit previous learning and strengthen their ability to remember and apply what they have learnt. It is wonderful to see every student making progress in both maths fluency and mathematical understanding!
This week, students explored different types of angles, including acute, obtuse, right, straight and revolution angles. They also investigated number sequences and complex branching patterns. Alongside this, students continued to build their skills in long division of large numbers with regrouping, identifying mixed numbers on a number line, calculating area and perimeter, and subtracting amounts of money.
Humanities
In Humanities, students continued to explore the Age of Explorers by learning about the fascinating Aztec Empire. They discovered what daily life was like for the Aztec people, explored their beliefs and achievements, located the empire on a map, and learned about the ancient city of Tenochtitlán. Students also examined artefacts to gain a deeper understanding of Aztec culture.
Students then investigated how Hernán Cortés and the Spanish conquered the Aztec Empire and explored the impact of Spanish conquest on Aztec people and their culture. They also had the opportunity to compare Spanish colonisation with British colonisation in Australia.
Reminders
- Event Reminder: Grade 4 Polly Woodside Excursion in week 8 - consents and payments due by Tuesday, 17th November 2026
- Please ensure students bring a clearly labelled water bottle to school each day.
- As we enter term 4 hats should be clearly labelled and brought to school every day.
- iPads should be fully charged and ready for learning each morning.
- Please ensure all uniform items are clearly labelled.
- Regular reading and practising multiplication and division facts at home will continue to support students’ learning. Timetables Rockstars and Numbots are good platforms to support students to develop mathematical fluency.
Thank you for your continued support throughout Term 4! Working together helps our students feel confident, grow their skills and do their best. Regular attendance is really important, so let’s aim to be at school every day and arrive on time, ready to learn and make the most of each day. We look forward to another great week of learning and celebrating our students’ progress and achievements!
Warm regards,
Grade 4 Team
