Grade 2 Community News

EMP (Explicit Maths Program)

Over the past fortnight, Grade 2 students have been learning to subtract three-digit numbers, including problems that require regrouping once. They have also been exploring fractions by shading equal parts of shapes and identifying and writing fractions to represent these parts. Through discussions and problem-solving tasks, students have been developing their understanding and confidence across these mathematical concepts.

Students have also been learning to read and represent time on analogue clocks, strengthening their understanding of clock faces and how to position the hands to show different times.

To support ongoing learning at home, students are encouraged to practise their number facts on Timetables Rockstars and NumBots, as well as to discuss fractions and read clocks in everyday situations.

InitiaLit (Literacy)

In literacy sessions, students have been continuing to develop their reading, spelling and writing skills through explicit phonics lessons and interactive activities.

This fortnight, students have been exploring words ending in a consonant plus ‘le’, learning to recognise and spell them. They have also been investigating nouns ending with the suffix ‘es’ and how this ending is used to form plural nouns.

Students have further developed their understanding of the spelling patterns ‘dge’ (bridge) and ‘ge’ (page), as well as ‘tch’ (catch) and ‘ch’ (lunch). They have been practising identifying these patterns in words and applying their knowledge during reading and writing activities.

Continued practice of these spelling patterns at home is encouraged to help strengthen students’ confidence, decoding skills and spelling accuracy.

Storybook – ‘Georges Marvellous Medicine’

In our Storybook lessons, students have been developing their comprehension skills through our class novel, George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl.

Our focus has been on making predictions about the text and using clues from the story to support our thinking. Students have also been practising answering literal and inferential questions. They have been learning to identify information that is directly stated in the text, as well as using clues and their own thinking to make inferences about characters and events.
