Level 1

What a big and busy fortnight it has been in Level 1! We have been learning, creating, measuring, swimming and, most importantly, having lots of fun along the way. Students have continued building their knowledge about animals and their habitats through Literacy and Inquiry, while Maths has been full of hands-on exploring as we investigated mass, capacity and fractions. Of course, the absolute highlight was our school swimming program, where we saw lots of smiles, splashes and growing confidence!
Literacy
This fortnight, our Level 1 students have continued their journey to becoming animal experts! They have been busy researching their chosen animals and learning how to turn interesting facts into an information report. Students are now beginning to create their own information report posters about an animal they have chosen. They have been learning how to organise their ideas using subheadings, as well as adding labelled diagrams and captions to make their reports interesting and informative. We have loved hearing the students share their new animal facts — there are certainly some little animal experts in Level 1!
Numeracy
Maths has been very hands-on this fortnight as we explored mass, capacity and fractions. Students have been getting stuck into lots of practical activities, including using balancing scales to compare the mass of different objects. They have had lots of fun making predictions, testing their ideas and measuring objects around the classroom. We have also been exploring wholes, halves and quarters through hands-on activities, helping students see how a whole can be split into equal parts. Students have enjoyed folding, sharing and creating their own halves and quarters while developing their understanding of fractions. We then put our new skills to the test by solving measurement and fraction problems. It has been fantastic to see students working together, sharing their thinking and explaining their ideas to their friends. We love seeing the different ways our students approach a problem and learn from one another!
Inquiry
Our Inquiry learning has been full of creativity as students continue exploring animals and their habitats. This fortnight, students investigated the different shapes that make up an animal’s body before getting their hands busy creating their own animals out of playdough. They then took their ideas into Makers Empire and began designing their animals using 3D shapes. Students have had so much fun thinking carefully about their animal’s features and working out how to bring them to life using simple shapes. There have been plenty of creative ideas, problem-solving moments and very proud smiles along the way!
Swimming
During Week 5, Level 1 students took part in our school swimming program, and what a wonderful week it was! It was so lovely to see the students swimming, splashing, playing and laughing with their friends while developing their swimming skills with the wonderful teachers at Aqua Nation. We were incredibly proud of how respectfully and responsibly the students behaved throughout the week. They did a fantastic job listening to their swimming teachers, looking after their belongings and following expectations while travelling to and from the pool. Most importantly, we loved seeing their confidence grow each day — there were plenty of happy faces coming back to school!
