Level 5

Swimming

Last week, Level 5 students participated in the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia’s ‘Swim and Survive’ program at Aquanation. The ‘Swim and Survive’ program is designed “to advance students’ confidence, skill level, stroke development, endurance, safety, and enjoyment’. The Level 5 students are to be commended for their efforts and exemplary behaviour. They represented our school community exceptionally well, following the swimming instructors directions and moving about the centre, and on and off the buses, with fantastic awareness and consideration for the other users of the facility. 

Level 5 Sport

Throughout the term, Level 5 students have been embracing SEPEP (Sports Education in Physical Education Program) during Monday afternoons as a Level 5 cohort. Students have taken an active role in designing and managing their own sporting season, coming together to decide which sports they would like to play, establish and agree upon rules, organise teams, and determine how their competitions will run. This student-centred approach provides valuable opportunities for student voice, choice and autonomy, while developing skills in collaboration, leadership, organisation, communication, decision-making and fair play. Rather than simply participating in sport, students are learning what it takes to plan, manage and take ownership of a sporting program. 

Literacy

Over the past few weeks, Level 5 students have immersed themselves in Linda Sue Park’s powerful novel ‘A Long Walk to Water’, reading in fluency pairs, and developing their comprehension skills while exploring themes of survival, resilience, courage and hope. Students have mapped the primary character, Salva’s journey, used questioning to deepen their understanding, and investigated how authors use verb choices and foreshadowing to create danger, fear and emotional impact. They have also made connections between the novel and other sources, considering different perspectives and the real-world context behind the story. 

In Writing, Level 5 students have been developing and refining their narrative writing skills, with a focus on crafting engaging stories from a clear and consistent point of view. Students have explored the importance of maintaining a consistent tense and developed their understanding of sentence fluency, experimenting with a variety of simple, compound and complex sentences to add depth and sophistication to their writing. They have worked through the editing process using the C.O.P.S. strategy (Capitalisation, Order, Punctuation and Spelling) before publishing their polished narratives using Google Docs. Through this process, students have strengthened their skills as thoughtful authors, editors and publishers. 

Numeracy

Level 5 students have been building on their understanding of fractions by exploring the relationship between fractions and ratios, including how ratios are used in real-life situations such as cooking and following recipes. Students have also been investigating statistics, learning how data can be gathered, represented and analysed to reveal patterns in the world around us. As part of a statistical investigation, students collected data about the cars in and around the school carpark, using tally marks, frequency tables, mode and mean, and represented their findings using column graphs with x- and y-axes. Students also learned how to pose statistical questions for specific audiences and consider what data can tell us. To consolidate their learning, students completed a Maths Moderation Task which challenged them to show their understanding and application of fractions by creating their own Smoothie Bar. 

Inquiry

In Inquiry, Level 5 students have been exploring Geography, interconnections and our place in the world, investigating how Australia and its people are connected to other places and communities across the globe. In recent weeks, we have narrowed our focus to the Asia–Pacific region and our near neighbours, exploring the geographical features and connections that make this region significant. Students have compared Australia with other countries, examining population, economies, customs, cultures and social structures, and considering how these similarities and differences influence people’s daily lives. Students have also investigated the ways Australia is connected to other countries through trade, tourism, migration, environmental connections and cultural links. This learning has connected beautifully with our Numeracy focus on statistics, with students using data, graphs and Venn diagrams to record, compare and communicate their findings.
