International Association of School Libraries Bookmark Project

The International Association of School Libraries (ISLA) Bookmark Exchange Project involves matched schools from around the world making homemade bookmarks to exchange by post.

Warrandyte High School was matched with Escola Básica João de Deus, a secondary school in São Bartolomeu de Messines, Portugal. The students at Escola Básica João de Deus chose the 50th Anniversary of the Carnation Revolution for their bookmark theme. The Carnation Revolution was a peaceful revolution that ended the Estado Novo dictatorship when soldiers refused to fight for the regime. To bring back democracy and end the colonial wars, they put carnations in their rifles instead of bullets. You can pick up a Carnation Revolution commemoration bookmark from the library.

In return, the 8.1, 9 & 10 VCD made beautiful bookmarks with the theme of Warrandyte’s natural bushland setting and other Aussie treasures. It was wonderful to see the interpretations of our unique environment!
