What's been happening in Term Three in Year One?
What a busy term we have had in Year One! Students have enjoyed learning and exploring different math concepts through hands-on tasks. We investigated mass, sharing objects into equal groups, using groups to solve division problems, finding location and direction, recognising and making 2D shapes, skip counting, growing and repeating patterns, and partitioning numbers.
Students learnt how to write procedural texts during writing sessions and enjoyed the teachers reading and acting out their writing to understand that they need to be clear and accurate with their words. They also learnt how to write acrostic poems about animals and their families. They learnt new digraphs, trigraphs, and contractions (should + not = shouldn't) during InitiaLit and applied these skills during reading tasks.
During Inquiry, students explored simple machines and learnt about wheels and axles, pulleys, wedges, screws, and inclined planes. They had the opportunity to plan, design, and create a playground or interactive toy using simple machines and showcased them to the school community.
We also celebrated Book Week, where students shared their favourite stories and authors and dressed up as their favourite book characters. During Book Week, we had Victoria Police visit and read to us to help build a connection with our local community and law enforcement. This term, students also participated in the Department Phonics Screener and the Pilot Numeracy Check.
And how can we forget the school production? Students had a great time learning their dances and songs and did a fantastic job over the two nights! We are so proud of how well they handled themselves both on and off the stage.
