Year Five and Six Maths

Our Year Five and SIx mathematicians have had a busy term, taking part in a range of extension workshops designed to stretch their thinking and problem-solving skills.

Melbourne University Outreach Program

In Week Six, we welcomed researchers from Melbourne University, who led a fascinating session on the mathematics of knot tying. Students explored how the number of overlaps in a knot determines whether it can be untied, and enjoyed sharing their theories and testing them out with their peers.

Victorian Maths Challenge

Working in teams of two to four, our students have tackled six different mathematical modules, each combining a fluency game, a fluency puzzle, problem-solving tasks, and a team challenge. They've kept a keen eye on the leader board as they competed against schools from across the state, and we're delighted that some teams will go on to compete externally against other Maths Challenge groups in Term Four.

Thinksquare Webinars

Students have also been connecting online with Andrew from Thinksquare, who has run a series of engaging Zoom sessions to build their mathematical reasoning through games and challenges. This week's highlight was Food Fight, where students put their statistical thinking to the test to work out the best strategic approach.
