Year 3 News

T.E.A.M

Year 3 students had a wonderful time learning about T.E.A.M; Together Everyone Achieves More! Throughout the activities, students practised working together, listening to one another, and supporting their classmates. They learned that when they cooperate, share ideas, and encourage each other, they can solve problems and reach our goals more easily.

It was great to see students showing kindness, responsibility, and teamwork in action. The Year 3 teachers are so proud of the positive choices they made and the effort they put into being great teammates. Way to go, Year 3!

Reading

In Reading, students have focused on reading comprehension, specifically learning how to summarise texts. They have learnt that summarising means retelling the most important parts of a story, not every detail. To help with this, students have been using the SWBST strategy; Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then. This strategy helps students to identify key information and organise their thinking in a clear and structured way, helping them better understand what they read.

Writing

In Writing, our Year 3 students have begun exploring the structure of a recount. They had the opportunity to share their summer holiday experiences and record their ideas using a graphic organiser. This supported students in using the 5 W’s (who, what, when, where and why) and 1 H (how) to plan their writing. By organising their ideas first, students were able to better understand the structure of a recount. They then used their planning to write a fully structured recount, including an introduction, a series of events in time order, and a conclusion.

Maths

Year 3 started their maths learning by focusing on place value with 3-digit and 4-digit numbers. They learnt how to read, write, and represent numbers, and explored the value of each digit in the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones places. They practised breaking numbers apart and putting them back together to build a strong understanding of how numbers work. It was great to see students growing in confidence and explaining their thinking using number language.

Inquiry

Year 3 began their inquiry learning by unpacking their knowledge of great journeys as they started the unit on the First Fleet. Year 3 students shared what they already knew and asked questions about journeys in the past, including why people travelled long distances and what those journeys may have been like. They explored different ideas and perspectives to build an understanding of the challenges and experiences of travelling by sea. It was great to see students engaged, curious, and eager to share their thoughts as we launched our new inquiry unit.

Social and Emotional Learning

SEL learning focused on showing respect to others and identifying emotions. Students learnt how to recognise different emotions in themselves and others, and discussed respectful ways to respond in different situations. They explored how words and actions can affect how others feel and practised using kindness, empathy, and active listening. It was great to see students building positive relationships and using respectful behaviour in their everyday interactions.

AUSLAN

The Year 3 cohort began their Auslan learning with a revision of the Auslan alphabet and greeting skills. Students practised signing the alphabet and had the opportunity to fingerspell their names confidently. They also participated in a turn-and-talk activity on the floor, where they greeted their peers using appropriate Auslan signs.

Buddies

During the T.E.A.M program, Year 3 students excitedly met their 2026 buddies! Students explored what it means to be a buddy and how this supports being kind, connected and an active member of the CPS community. They had lots of fun getting to know one another by asking questions, sharing lunch together, and doing some collaborative games together, as well as completing “All About Me” profiles. It has been wonderful to see new friendships blossoming and to hear happy greetings exchanged in the playground each day.
