Year 4 News

Reading
In Reading, Year 4 students have been focusing on understanding and using key non-fiction text features, such as headings, subheadings, contents pages, glossaries, diagrams, captions, and indexes. By exploring how these features help readers locate and understand information, students are becoming more confident researchers and thoughtful readers of informational texts. It has been wonderful to see their growth both in their classroom habits and in their literacy learning.
“ I found the Glossary and Index are always found at the end of a text”- Gurnoor 4A
“I learnt that the Glossary has all the bold words from the book I read.”- Taylan 4A
“We looked at the text features subheadings, headings, titles and contents page.” - Samrath 4C
Writing
In Writing, Year 4 students have started 2026 by writing recounts about their favourite day during their school holidays. They explored the 5 W’s (Who, What, When, Where, Why) and 1 H (How) to assist them with the structure of their recount. Students also practised their revising and editing skills by using different strategies such as substituting words for more interesting ones, adding and removing words and checking their punctuation and spelling for any mistakes.
“We learnt how to use the 5W’s to write our recounts.” - Deepti 4C
“I wrote about my trip to London.” - Ansh 4C
Maths
In Maths, Year 4 students explored place value by representing and writing numbers using base-10 blocks, place value charts and an abacus. Students began by practising making familiar numbers with base-10 blocks and writing them in numerals, words and expanded form, focusing on how each digit’s place affects the number. They then used place value charts and an abacus to represent larger numbers, gaining a deeper understanding of number structure.
“It was challenging but I gave it a go.” - Olivia 4A
“It was fun learning to represent numbers in a new way.” - Gurnoor 4A

Inquiry
In Inquiry, Year 4 have been learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their connection to Country and Place. They have learnt about the differences and similarities between an Acknowledgement of Country and a Welcome to Country, drafting ideas of what should be included in each, and using this to create a whole class Acknowledgement of Country. Students then looked at how the traditional custodians used and cared for the lands and took part in a rotation activity to learn more about Indigenous food, shelter, art and tools.
“We’ve been learning about Aboriginal people and how they take care of the land they live on, and how we can too.” - Elora 4B

Social and Emotional Learning
In SEL, Year 4 students have discussed how to be responsible when using the bathroom and the drink taps. They reviewed when the appropriate times were to go (before school, during break times, and after school). Students explored why it is important to follow expectations and brainstormed ways to help a friend be responsible with bathroom and drink tap use. They worked collaboratively to create posters outlining when it is appropriate to use the bathroom and drink taps.
“We can go to the toilet or drinktaps if it is an emergency.” - Deepti 4C
“We can go to the toilet or drink taps if one hour has passed during our morning and afternoon sessions.” - Christopher 4C
Buddies
Over the past fortnight, Year 4 students have met their 2026 buddies! Students discussed what it means to be a buddy and how it connects to being kind, connected and a part of the CPS community. They practised asking questions to get to know one another, ate lunch together and filled in profiles about me. It has been wonderful to see students form new friendships and hear them greeting each other in the yard!

Alternate Weather Timetable
As part of an SWPBS lesson within our T.E.A.M program, Year 4 students revisited expectations for indoor play during an alternate weather timetable. As a team, students discussed suitable indoor play options such as relaxing in the calm corner, talking quietly with a friend, drawing on a mini whiteboard, being creative and crafting something, along with many other fantastic ideas! All alternate weather timetable posters will be visible in the classroom to ensure students have a visual reminder of what is expected.
