Every year in March, Harmony week is celebrated in Australia to recognise the cultural, linguistic and religious diversity of our society. This year, Epping Boys held a whole school assembly on the COLA to celebrate the multiculturalism of our school and to commit to avoiding racism in all its forms. The Prefects led the school in a pledge to stand against racism and to create a school culture in which everyone, regardless of culture or creed, experiences belonging.

Both our school and the local area are diverse communities. The Prefects reflected in their speech that at the time of Harmony Day, there were students within both the Muslim month of Ramadan and the Christian season of Lent. They also acknowledged that our Jewish community would soon celebrate the Passover, our Hindu students had recently celebrated Holi and the Persian New Year was at the end of Harmony Week. They also mentioned the celebrations of Lunar New Year that had already occurred earlier in the term. A diverse community!

Epping Boys currently has 77% of students with a Language Background Other than English, representing 63 languages all the way through the alphabet from Afrikaans to Vietnamese. It is important to be able to acknowledge the diversity of our school and celebrate the sharing of cultures and respect for one another’s differences.
