TLI and High Ability @ HEPS

High Ability at HEPS
This year, we have two High Ability Practice leaders. Mrs Kim Holmes and Mr Jason Mulder.
Please email us if you have any questions about High Ability at HEPS.
VHAP Masterclass @Ringwood North Primary School
Last Friday our VHAP students participated in their VHAP Masterclass at Ringwood North Primary School. Our students joined other VHAP students from Great Ryrie PS and Ringwood North PS, where they either joined peers in the Maths or Writing Masterclass.
Maths Masterclass
Students explored code, coding and properties of numbers and number systems. They worked in small groups and applied different code and aspects of code to calculate values of words. They also looked at Caesar's master code and how it was used through the application square numbers.
Writing Masterclass
Students were challenged to develop a narrative story with exactly 100 words and begin each sentence with a letter in order of the alphabet.
Students worked on learning about different types of humour and adding this to their writing. They explored satire, slapstick, comics, and rhapsodic humour. We had some very creative teams, including a rhapsody about maths to a Taylor Swift song and a tune of the wheels on the bus about soccer.
High-Ability Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series
Last week, 25 students from level 4 and 6 participated in the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment series. They explored…
- What is Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it can be incorporated into interactive game use.
How AI can be used to reduce food waste.
The students created a game using Scratch MIT Media Labs (different to the normal Scratch program) and controlled the game using their own hand gestures or head movements!
They also -
1. Explored what Artificial Intelligence (AI) is and its impacts on global sustainability.
2. Learnt the process of developing a teachable machine.
3. Discovered how Scratch and teachable machines can be used to create a game, highlighting the application of AI in making the food industry more sustainable.
4. Designed their own interactive AI game, using the online coding platform Scratch.
HEPS High Ability Games Mornings
Twice a term HEPS runs social games for students with like minds. This is held in the BER on selected Sunday mornings. We also join with students from Eastwood Primary, Mitcham Primary, Antonio Park Primary, Ringwood North Primary and Great Ryrie Primary. This is open to students from 8-13 years.
Please email Mrs Holmes or Ms Lui if you would like more information on this fun new initiative.
Maths Olympiad
Our first Maths Olympiad contest is on the 5th of May (next term). The team will be announced this coming week and will consist of students across Grades 4-6. Students will be involved in fortnightly (sometimes weekly) sessions starting this Thursday. They will also have an opportunity to work with Heathmont College and one of their maths teachers during some masterclasses. More information to come about this.
ICAS
What is ICAS?
ICAS is an online academic competition that gives students the opportunity to challenge their higher order thinking and problem-solving skills in subjects such English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee, and Digital Technologies. Once again, we will be offering only English, Mathematics and Digital Technologies.
ICAS results are in-depth and meaningful, and ICAS evaluates student performance against other competition entrants across the state and nation. The data reveals student strengths and weaknesses and can help you recognise and support your child's academic journey.
Learn more about ICAS here: (icasassessments.com/products-icas/).
ICAS results and certificate
Every student who participates is celebrated and recognised with a printed certificate in each subject area, and an online results report to track development each year. Top performers are eligible for one of the highly coveted ICAS medals. Your child’s ICAS certificates will show their results and the login details, “TAP ID and Pin”. - Use these to enter the Results Portal (https://orti.icasassessments.com/ortiStudent).
