Level 1

We can hardly believe that we are already approaching the end of Term 1 in Level 1. It has been a wonderful start to the year, filled with so much learning, fun and exciting experiences.
Inquiry
Our excursion to Como House was a wonderful experience for the students. They had a fantastic time exploring the beautiful gardens while completing a scavenger hunt to solve the 'Mystery of the Broken Doll'. We also stepped back in time to learn about the hard work involved in daily household tasks, such as washing clothes by hand and cleaning and polishing dishes. The students enjoyed playing old-fashioned lawn games, and exploring the grand house was fascinating as they discovered how a prestigious family once lived in their mansion.
Another highlight of our Inquiry unit was when all the Level 1 students came together at school to play more old-fashioned games. We enjoyed a circle chase game of ‘Cat and Mouse’, a beanbag toss, walking on stilts, and using skipping ropes and hula hoops. We even practised writing using chalk and old blackboards.
We are also looking forward to our upcoming ‘Classroom Museum’, where students will have the opportunity to share an artefact from the past with their peers.
Harmony Day
This week, we came together as a whole school to celebrate Harmony Day. On this special day, we learned that everyone belongs, no matter our differences. We celebrated what makes each of us unique and worked to ensure that everyone feels included. We began with a special performance at our morning assembly before moving into our multi-age groups. In these groups, we rotated through a variety of activities, including games and mosaics from around the world, South American language experiences, and exploring European landmarks. What an amazing day!
Maths
In Maths, we have been learning how to partition and rename numbers into tens and hundreds. We had lots of fun creating our own animals for our ‘Place Value Zoo’ activity, where we used MAB blocks to build an animal and then applied our understanding of place value to work out how large our animal was. We are also learning how to rename numbers when there are more than 10 in a column of our place value chart. Another activity we enjoyed was building a part-whole triangle to further deepen our understanding of partitioning numbers.
