Leo Busch and Liam Thompson, Year 10.

Leo and Liam are proving that service can start well before you board a plane.

Ahead of their upcoming AngliSchools Service-Learning Trip to Samoa, Leo and Liam — two of the three St George’s students travelling to Apia on 17 September — decided to take on an optional fundraising initiative to support All Saints Anglican School in Apia, where they will spend time during the trip.

On Sunday, 16 August, the pair set up a bacon-and-egg burger stall at Bassendean FC, serving hungry soccer players, families and spectators. From sourcing ingredients and organising the location to marketing, logistics and cooking, Leo and Liam handled the entire fundraiser themselves.

Their efforts certainly paid off, with the burgers selling out and $513 in profit raised for All Saints School.

For Leo, the upcoming trip is about much more than visiting a new place. He is looking forward to building cultural understanding, connecting with students at All Saints and developing qualities such as compassion, leadership and resilience.

As ambassadors for St George’s, Leo and Liam will be taking Wisdom, Grace and Service with them — and they’ve already shown us what that looks like in action. 

Chloe Dillon, Year 9

Kudos to Chloe for her efforts in running alongside world champion ultra runner Phil Gore as part of Project 168 for Telethon. On 25 August, Chloe woke at midnight to hit the road at 1am alongside Gore whose Project 168 challenge saw him running 6.7 km every hour for 168 hours (seven days). 

Accompanied by her father Ryan, Chloe jogged and chatted alongside the athlete who, despite next to no sleep, was in good spirits with his fellow runners. 

Gore's goal was to complete 168 laps, covering about 1127km. Gore  started  a new 6.7 km lap at the beginning of every hour, with any time left after finishing each lap used to eat, drink, rest and sleep before starting again.

In an incredible effort, he completed 152 laps (about 1020 km) over six days and eight hours before pulling up stumps. The challenge also raised money for Telethon, supporting children and families in Western Australia.

Chloe is now turning her efforts to another sporting passion - football. She is currently in the trialling camp for the Perth Demon Development Squad. Good luck, Chloe.  

The ‘City to Surf’ Six

And finally, let’s hear it for our St George’s staff superstars who gathered bright and early at 50 William Street last Sunday to tackle the 12km Chevron City to Surf for genU.

Now an annual tradition, the St George’s crew included Mr Bochrinis, Mr Kerrigan and his son Dylan, Mrs Tagore, Mrs de Witt, Mrs Quartermain and Mrs Harris — along with a surprise appearance at our school start line from Ms Jodie Scheele and Year 11 student Heath Wilson-Clark.

But perhaps the best part was discovering that we weren’t alone! Along the way, the team crossed paths with plenty more St George’s faces — including Miss Yoxall, Miss Bakeberg, Ms Sephton and Miss Hewitt and 36 students — who were stationed at the 5km mark with some very welcome supplies.

And just when the finish line was in sight, Year 9 twins Ben and Mitchell Clark were spotted conquering the final hill. Now that’s what we call St George’s spirit!
