Book Week with a twist

The Laurence Library joined in the Book Week celebrations with plenty happening across the week. Library staff embraced the occasion by dressing as characters from The Chronicles of Narnia, while lessons in the Library were also given a Book Week twist. Mrs Sykiotis’s Chinese class, for example, explored The Peasant Prince by Li Cunxin and Anne Spudvilas, the picture book adaptation of Mao’s Last Dancer.

Two competitions also ran throughout the week. Students were challenged to guess the number of bookworms in a jar, with the final answer being 42, despite our initial count of 43, so one appears to have mysteriously disappeared! Congratulations to Kenzi W (Year 7), Emma T (Year 8), Penny S (Year 8) and Asten M (Year 8). Our second competition asked students to identify three shredded books: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, Don’t Call Me Ishmael by Michael Gerard Bauer and The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis. Quinn G (Year 8) took out the competition, with Zara J (Year 12) and Mia M (Year 12) as runners-up.

Through a Book Week Morning Tea initiative, we were also pleased to raise enough funds for the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation to provide a Literacy & Numeracy Pack for students in need. Thank you again to our Library Prefect Eva C for kickstarting this initiative! Thanks to everyone who participated, donated and helped make Book Week such an enjoyable week.

In the coming weeks, the Library will also be launching Informit, our new educational database platform. We’ll be working with students to build confidence in using academic databases, evaluating sources and locating reliable, accurate information for their research.
