Honouring Mothers and Mentors

Year 10 Mothers and Mentors Supper
On Wednesday evening last week, the College welcomed a room full of women who matter deeply to our Year 10 boys: mothers, grandmothers, aunts, teachers and mentors, gathered for our annual Mothers and Mentors Supper.
For one hour, the boys stepped back from being students and became hosts. They served supper and tea, they sat alongside their special guests, and they gave something that no school program can manufacture: their full attention and gratitude, to the woman sitting next to them.
In the weeks leading up to the evening, each boy wrote a letter. What he chose to say was his alone. Some of the women read those letters in the room. Most folded them carefully and took them home, knowing what the words would do to them when they finally sat down quietly to read.
Father Michael offered a blessing that settled over the room in the way his blessings do. Not as a formality, but as something the boys and their guests will carry with them.
What the Mothers and Mentors Supper asks of our Year 10 students is not complicated. It asks them to pause, to look at the women who have shaped them, who have sacrificed for them and to say thank you. Every year, the boys rise to the occasion.
To everyone who joined us, thank you for accepting that gift with such grace.
Jane Cox
Head of Year 10
