A Space for Silence

As part of the Year 9 pilgrimages last week, we invited the boys to walk a section of the journey in complete silence. They rose to the challenge beautifully, reminding us of the quiet power of stillness.

In the busyness of family life, silence can feel rare. Yet it is often in these quiet moments that God speaks most gently to our hearts. Sacred silence is not empty. It is filled with presence. It is where we listen, where we notice and where we remember that we are loved.

For families at Mazenod, sacred silence can be simple: a pause before meals, a few calm breaths at the end of the day or time spent together without noise or distraction. In these moments, we allow God to enter our homes through the peace it generates.

Let us teach our children that silence is not something to fear, but something to treasure. In our Catholic tradition, it is a doorway to prayer, to gratitude and to a deeper connection with one another and with God. As Psalm 46 reminds us: “Be still and know that I am God.”

Last week, our Year 9 students undertook a 10km pilgrimage from St Joseph’s Subiaco to St Mary’s Cathedral and across the Boorloo Bridge to Burswood Park, continuing their journey along the Camino Salvado.

Throughout the day, students were invited to pray, reflect and carry a personal intention. They participated in shared prayer, celebrated Mass at the Cathedral and experienced periods of quiet reflection, including time in silence.

We are extremely proud of the way the boys conducted themselves. Their respectful, reverent behaviour was outstanding, with many members of the public commenting positively. It was a wonderful example of the spirit of Mazenod in action. Thank you to all the Mazenod staff who came with us and supported our boys on this important journey.

Invitation to Friday Community Mass

Families and community members are warmly invited to join us for our Mazenod Community Mass each Friday at 8:00am in the College Chapel. This simple and welcoming celebration is a beautiful way to pray together, support our students and begin the day grounded in faith. All are most welcome to attend.

Sacramental Program

The College sent out a message to all families and students this week regarding our Sacramental Program and a call for those students and families who would like to enquire about receiving the Sacraments.

These Sacraments mark important milestones in the life of faith, flowing from a genuine desire to grow closer to Jesus. While no student is ever expected to receive the Sacraments, Mazenod College is always pleased to support those who feel called to do so.

Although these celebrations typically take place within a parish, we recognise that this is not always possible for every family. For this reason, the College is pleased to offer a Sacramental Program in Terms 3 and 4, open to students from all year levels. The program will run once a week during class time.

Students preparing for Baptism, Reconciliation and Eucharist will have the opportunity to celebrate these Sacraments before Christmas this year. Preparation for Confirmation will also begin, with the celebration likely to take place in the new year, depending on parish schedules.

Families are encouraged to discuss this opportunity together. Participation is entirely voluntary and follows a period of preparation and reflection.

If you would like your son to take part in the Sacramental Program, please register your interest via the Sacramental Program Registration link below by Friday, 19 June 2026.
