Year 3 News

Memories created
What a fantastic finish to Term 3! Our Grade 3 students have enjoyed another busy fortnight filled with reflection, exploration, creativity and hands-on learning.
Reading
Students strengthened their comprehension by practising strategies including predicting, making connections, questioning and inferring. They learned to combine clues from a text with their prior knowledge and provide evidence to support their ideas. Students also revisited the expectations for reading groups and conferences, set reading goals and continued developing their fluency.
Writing
Students revisited the writing process, from generating and planning ideas through to drafting, revising, editing and publishing. They learned strategies for working independently and making effective use of their writing time while waiting for a conference. Students also set writing goals and practised the “say, say, say, then write, write, write” strategy. This encouraged them to rehearse a complete sentence before recording it, helping their writing become clearer and better organised. At the end of the unit, students reflected on their progress and identified evidence of their growth.
Maths
Students explored location, mapping and directional language. They interpreted maps from a bird’s-eye view, located landmarks using grid references and gave instructions involving left, right, straight ahead, clockwise and anticlockwise turns. Students then applied their learning through practical activities, including directing a partner, creating maps and designing mazes for others to navigate.
A highlight of our Inquiry learning was our walking excursion to Royal Park. Students enjoyed observing and sketching some of the native plants and animals found in our local environment. They considered how the plants may be connected to animals and the environment, and how they might be important to aboriginal peoples. The excursion provided a valuable opportunity to connect our classroom learning with the natural environment and consider how we can help care for Country.
We would like to extend a very special thank-you to the parents and carers who volunteered to accompany us to Royal Park. Your time, support and enthusiasm helped the excursion run safely and smoothly, and allowed our students to enjoy such a valuable learning experience. We greatly appreciate your contribution!
We also celebrated the conclusion of our cooking program with a very special pizza party! Students worked together to create delicious pizzas using fresh ingredients from the school garden. It was a wonderful way to bring together the kitchen skills, teamwork and confidence they have developed throughout the term. The students were especially excited to share and enjoy their creations together.
We are incredibly proud of everything our Grade 3 students have achieved throughout Term 3. Their curiosity, creativity and positive approach to learning have made it a wonderful term. We hope all our students and families enjoy a safe, relaxing and well-deserved break!
