Biz -E -Kidz Update

From Libby Hanna, Coordinator
Learning about iconic Aboriginal women at Biz-E-Kidz After School Care
Last week at Biz-E-Kidz was all about iconic First Nations Australian women. We spent a day each week focusing on athletes Kathy Freeman, Faith Thomas and Ash Barty, musician Jessica Mauboy and artist Sally Gabori. See below Educator reflections from the "Captain's Log" to hear what has been happening at Biz-E-Kidz over the past fortnight.
Preps
There was great watercolour making for the Sally Gabori themed art day.
I enjoyed talking about Cathy Freeman with the kids.
Two children built a really cool lego house where they made half each and then combined them.
By Charlie
My best thing from today was playing soccer outside with lots of people, I enjoyed practising and getting better.
A child and I were making legos together, problem solving how to create different animals without any instructions. We made many different animals including a crocodile and a red back spider.
Preps enjoyed feeding the worm farm, learning the steps involved and looking at the wiggly worms.
Juniors
Children were really responsible on the walk, showing respect and awareness to their surroundings, I had good conversations with my group and there was a cat sitting by the window we all said hi to.
Soccer game was very popular and children wanted to be involved in different ways (e.g., referee, spectators, goal keepers, defenders).
A child was really keen on learning new vocabulary surrounding soccer, and since I was watching on, I taught him the word ‘spectate’ which he liked creating new sentences for.
A child made a really cool box with pictures of native Australian animals on it and inside he made a variety of different models and booklets about the animals. (this has fed into next week's program plan focusing on a different Australian animal each week!)
A child noticed that I was stretching and asked me why. When I told her that I was having some back pain she showed me some stretches that she said her mum did to relieve back pain. I thought it was so sweet the care that she showed.
A child is really into his science topics, recently learnt about acids and bases and gave me quite a few examples. Another child was telling me about homing pigeons from WW2, and we exchanged some interesting information about their role during the war. Both of them liked learning from each other's ideas and knowledge.
Seniors
Two children expressed interest in making food at BEK; they asked Jack who does program planning and if we could “Make focaccia”. (Potentially could re-start cooking sessions?)
Children have been playing volleyball, cricket and soccer outside, practising their skills with children of different ages.
Clubs been popular, we will be investigating re-introducing cooking as an option for next term!
Children have been making Lego beyblades and Lego mini shops.
Children in Seniors Program have been interested in our logo design, seeing Educator Gab working on it. We almost have ready some versions to show our community and make a decision on. We are incorporating two different key images from Biz-E-Kidz - one is the beautiful big gum tree at our front gate at Errol St, the other is the Errol St northside playground.
Did you know that the name Biz-E-Kidz was chosen by the children after submissions from the children, all the way back in 2004? That explains how it seems a bit retro now, but we love how it refers to both the place and the children, who we call Biz-E-Kidz when we address them as a group.
We're looking forward to seeing many of our families over the holidays at our Holiday Program, and to everyone else, have a great break!
