Year 2 News

From Risa Hammel, Year 2E teacher
Happy last week of term to all our Year 2s and their families! These last two weeks have been filled with learning and excitement.
English
We have spent time looking at, questioning, and analysing a few different books. We started by reading “The Monster of the Deep” by Taylor Zajonc. We identified the author’s purpose and summarised the story. We also investigated how the author used the writing technique of “show not tell” to convey character emotions. In writing, we practiced this technique to show how a character is feeling, rather than explicitly stating it. For example, how would you “show” someone is feeling sad?
We then investigated the book “The Sweetest Fig” by Chris Van Allsburg. We discussed inside and outside character traits, the importance of images, how authors write from various perspectives, and made connections between morals of different stories. We then write the same story, but from the perspective of a different character, practicing analysing events and emotions through different eyes.
Maths
We had two units on chance and probability and location and mapping. In the chance and probability unit, we got familiar with using the likelihood language to describe everyday events. What is the likelihood that I will wake up with superpowers? Impossible! We then conducted several chance experiments, such as picking coloured teddies, MAB blocks, and rolling dice. Our second unit was on location and mapping. Our Grade 2s practiced directional language, giving directions from point A to point B, and then looked at locating and plotting items on grid references. We then played Battle Ships, a favourite for everyone!
We have continued to look at emotional regulation in wellbeing and online safety in technology. We have had discussions about how to be safe online and practiced our typing so we can get quicker and more accurate.
Please ensure your child has a hat ready for the start of next term, as we will be returning to our No Hat, No Play rule. We hope everybody has a safe and relaxing term 3 holidays and we will see everybody for term 4!
