Thriving in Year Three

In Year 3, your child is learning that a fraction is more than just two numbers; it’s a way to describe equal parts of a whole object. We spend a lot of time "partitioning", which is just a fancy word for splitting things up, and learning to name those parts correctly.

At home, you can support this by making fractions a natural part of your day. Whether you’re dividing up a snack or measuring ingredients for dinner, show your child that fractions are just "fair shares" in the real world. Don't worry about formulas; keep it hands-on. If they get stuck, grab some Lego or fold a piece of paper to show how those parts fit back together. These everyday conversations build the visual "map" they need to feel confident in the classroom.
